I gained 10 pounds

in two months. Pasta, pizza, cheese, bread, wine, gelato ...it didn't take long. All that walking in cities and hill towns didn't offset it. But, I was fat and happy indulging and would do it again.

Hey, I'm a southern girl love biscuits / ham ect. I can't imagine going to Rome , such a wonderful place and not enjoying the food.. that is half the trip. Plus 10 pounds is not too bad. It's a good thing you were not there 6 months !

I actually managed to maintain my weight while I was traveling in Italy for 3 weeks but we were averaging 8-10miles walking per day as compared to my desk job at home where I get virtually zero exercise.

I've gained 5lbs since being home...lol mostly from visiting local places that sell imitation Italian food...in a vain search for something that doesn't exist here. I miss the real Italian food so much!

Italy is not a place to diet! The quality of the food is so high, fresh, and has so much less, or none of the additives that we allow in food here in US.

The care and love that goes into the food makes it very satisfying so that I tended to eat smaller meals, but frequently!
I also tried to enter the country about 7 lbs. light, because I knew I was going to consume LOTS of gelato.
I had been told how wonderful the food was in Italy, but it far exceeded my expectations!

I actually lose weight with extended travel in Europe. I walk about 2-3x as much as I do at home (which is probably twice as much as the average American) and even though I do consume more yummy things, still try not to over-indulge. As a couple have mentioned, the challenge for me is not to gain it back after coming home.

For sure I walked more in Italy than I ever do back in my hometown. As others have said the food there was fantastic. I did manage to pack a bottle of Chianti Classico. I also got really use to and loved espresso. I bought a stove top espresso maker to take back with me. The two part pot that is filled with water to the relief valve, set in the metal basket, fill it with fine grain Italian coffee, screw it together and put on the stove. Great Coffee!

You must have indulged. I eat a whole lot when I am in Italy but the amount of walking is generally so much more compared to my sedentary lifestyle here in the US that I don't gain much. Also the estrogens in American meat (and Monsanto's Frankenfoods) ensure that I gain weight in America more than I do in Italy.
Well. Just control your calories for a while. Try the app "My Fitness Pal". It's easy to use.

making a trip to Italy is a indulgence, food & wine goes with it.

Jim that coffee maker sounds perfect. What is the brand, if you don't mind sharing? :)

35 days in Europe (including 13 days in Italy). I lost 4 lbs. In Italy I ate gelato everyday, Sometime twice a day. I ate pastries for breakfast and a ton of bread and cheese in every country. I still dream of British bacon sandwiches. We walked absolutely everywhere. We walked all day.

So sadly I gained 20 lbs in 3.5 months once I returned home. We've experimented a lot trying to re-create a lot of the foods we had in Europe. We've had a lot of success. I'm on weight watchers now.

I totally agree! We spent 3 weeks in Italy, ate bread, pasta, pizza and gelato at least once a day and the veggies we would have were usually cooked in olive oil and I still managed to lose weight unintentionally! It's all the walking and step climbing in every city we visit. And alas, just like the others, I gained the weight back and more upon returning home. Still struggling to lose that extra weight. I must plan an Italian trip soon as it's so good for my waistline!

I lose weight in Italy, too. Some of it comes back when I return. Nothing in Toledo OH makes a 10-15k walk interesting enough. Even the beautiful public parks.

I think a lot of the weight loss that occurs during travel is from dehydration. I lost 8 pounds in France, and put it back on in a week at home, and that would be very hard to do just from food.
