I do not want to stay in Rome after a cruise

Hi, I'm looking for recommendations of where to stay after a cruise that ends in Rome. Do not hate me, but I'm a flight attendant and have been to Rome many times. My family and I did 2 weeks in Italy this year and do not want to go back into the city for one night. We will be arriving into the port on April 10th. It seems like trying to make an 11:05 flight is pushing it. Has anyone stayed in Ostia before? Can anyone recommend a non touristy less crowded town to stay? We would just like to relax and have a nice meal before we fly home. Thank you!

We stayed in Ostia after a cruise last year. It was in July and the town was basically a busy beach resort. I don't know what it would be like in April. I suspect in would be pretty quiet. There are a lot of good restaurants ranging from sidewalk Pizza to fine dining. Look at yelp or tripadvisor. But, again, April?? Not sure they would all be open. We also took a taxi to nearby Ostia Antica ruins. Highly recommended if you are interested in that stuff.

We went with some friends in a van from the port to the airport and then took a taxi on to our hotel in Ostia. Then we had the hotel arrange a taxi to the airport at the end of our stay. Roughly 15=20minutes as I recall and went directly to our terminal. Don't remember the fee so it was probably reasonable.

As you are probably aware the airport hotels are not all that good and very pricey to boot.

Tivoli, Viterbo, Orvieto?

It is generally inadvisable to take a train trip the day of a flight to the USA.

Don’t you have to be at FCO at 8 am for your 11am flight ?

There is always the town of Fiumicino - many hotels offer transportation to/from the airport, and many restaurants with good seafood.

Lido di Ostia takes about 1:10 by train from Roma Termini. Ostia’s only 5 miles from FCO.
Have a great trip!

Just to say that mostly the people on this website are helpful and not rude. But people are people everywhere….. So welcome - and please don’t write ALL of us off. :)

But I am no help for Rome….. although interested in the answers you get.

I would stay at the airport Hilton and drink at the bar. If you want you could stay in some hotel in Fiumicino (the town), which has several cheaper hotels and restaurants, although the pesky taxi cabs will ask at least 25€ for the short ride to the airport.

I didn’t see rude comments? Was a rude comment deleted?

Hotel Tiber in Fiumicino is a great place to stay, with good restaurants nearby.

Thank you all. We are thinking of Ostia or Fiumicino. I would love any input on pros and cons of both.

No pros or cons for either. In April both will be pretty quiet. Wherever you find the accommodations you like would work.

My sister and her family visit Italy often and like to fly direct to Rome from LAX. They recommend this little boutique hotel in Fiumicino:

They enjoy a quiet walk on the beach, dinner near the hotel, and a good night’s sleep, with a very short ride to the airport in the morning.

Hello!
I’m also an airline employee & I’ve been to Ostia, but I don’t remember much being there except the historical site.
My question is: Where do you look to find the best hotel rates for non rev? It once was so easy, now there doesn’t seem to be many discounts anywhere. What site do you use?
Thanks!!

Start with Booking.com or trivago.com.
Make sure to clear cookies before each search. Somehow, the more I search the same location without clearing cookies, the more the website shows me higher prices. I don’t know what goes on, but I suspect those platforms change things once they realize you are really interested in a location.
Also many hotels place only a limited number of rooms in those platforms, therefore check their individual websites as well.
I often book at the last minute (literally) and somehow I get the best deals that way. Obviously if you are interested in a specific place that is very popular, it might be booked in that case, so if you are a last minute booker you need to be flexible.

Look hotel listings up under “Lido di Ostia”. and “Fiumicino” at Booking.com

Last month I, too, wanting to avoid the hustle and bustle of Rome stayed at Hotel Tiber in Fiumicino. Accommodations were reasonably priced, basic and very clean. My room overlooked the waterfront. There was a nice variety of restaurants, a bank, and grocery store within walking distance. The hotel shuttle cost 7 euros each way for a very quick less than 10 minute ride to the airport.

Ostia is the port city and quite charming. We stayed at Fly Deco which is at the coast and an 8 minute walk to the train station. Ostia Antica is the Roman Ruin site and really a wonderful place to visit if you haven't been there. It is easy to get to on the train from Ostia.

I third Hotel Tiber. That’s what we’ll do after our October trip. Make reservations early bc fill up quickly. If the website indicates no reservations, call.
