Do you need a passport ID for making train reservations with Trenitalia or Italo? We are traveling Sept 18 and those tickets are becoming available but our passports are not back from their renewal process. Can you use your drivers license if necessary?

I don't know about Italo, but Trenitalia doesn't require passport info. You will need an Italian address if you register, just use your hotel's address or the Trenitalia street address - they will contact you via email, not snail mail.

While you need an Italian address to register, there is no need to register to make bookings. Just click the non registered user option when booking.
I suggest you try making a dummy booking (stopping at the point where it asks for credit card details). That way you can iron out any issues you have before the tickets you want come on sale.
