husband and wife, 10 day trip

good morning,

we were invited on a trip to Tuscany for 5 days (June 8-13th) with some friends celebrating 20 years of marriage.... (we will visit Florence during that time). where is a good place to go before and where should we fly into? We want a small town, something chill and beautiful with awesome food. just my husband and I. The group is flying out of Rome on the 14th, and my husband hasn't seen Rome so we will take the train on the 13th from Tuscany to Rome. Spend one night in Rome. Right now, the hotels are bonkers in Rome....where is a good place to stay, where easy to get to airport that isn't $700 a night?

To my first question, Should we fly into Milan or Bologna...probably on the 5th. Then go to:
Cinque Terre?
Portofino?
Lake Como?
Treia, Marche?

I would appreciate all the info! thank you.

If price is a concern, rule out Portofino, but the adjacent towns and villages are excellent choices.
That area is easy to reach from Milan, but not terribly difficult if you fly into Pisa for example.
Lake Como of course pairs well with a a Milan arrival.
I don’t know Treia, but Marche is lovely.
Really this is the hardest part because there are so many options—Just pick one place and go for it!

I agree to rule out Portofino. Go to adjacent Santa Margherita Ligure instead. A perfect place!
Or go to Lake Como. We have gone there regularly for years and like Bellagio for its good choices of restaurants. If you prefer a quieter location on the lake consider Vernazza or go to the other side of the lake to Lecco.

Where in Tuscany are you staying?
We have found that airline prices are lower for Milan, if that's important for you.
Lake Como is beautiful, but you might find lodging scarce at this late date- Bellagio is bigger than charming Varenna, so that may be the better option.
Rome hotel inflation is probably due to the Jubilee.
Make sure all your accommodations have AC, as it will be hot everywhere.
Enjoy your trip. Safe travels!
