Huge difference between weather in September vs. October?

My available options for vacationing in central/northern Italy (Rome is as far south as we're going to go) are to go mid through late September or mid through late October. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Is mid-September still considered peak season? I'm just trying to weigh the pros/cons of weather, price, and crowds.

September is what RS calls part of the "shoulder" season...a good time to visit, after the summer rush. The weather is usually wonderful. I have never been in late October but I believe you would have a greater chance of damp weather and it might be a bit chilly. Check out the website Kent recommended...it is great! I don't think you would find the prices any different between the two months.

We have found that mid to late October is less expensive. The hotels that we stayed in had a price drop in October and sometimes even more for early Nov, and no discounts for September.
Yes the weather has been cooler, but you also have the advantage of not worrying about hotels having AC.

We have been to Italy (Rome & Venice) in Sept, Oct, and Nov. Late Oct & Nov we have had some rain, not a lot. Maybe we were just lucky, but we definitely prefer Oct & early to mid Nov.

Whichever you decide, have a great trip!
