We will be starting our trip flying into Rome (May of next year). I was planning on skipping Rome, and driving straight to Orvieto (base) to explore Assisi/Umbria and the Val d'Orcia. It will be my wife and I and our 2 kids (will be 6,8). My wife and I have been to all the major sites in Rome, and I was staying away from big cities to make things easier (but how can we not visit the Eternal city being so close).
Rome could be 2 days or even 1. I'm not expecting much, and would be ok just visiting 1 or 2 sites ex. Colosseum (should keep the kids attention). After this, we are driving down to Cetara.
Some options
1) Base the entire time in Orvieto to minimize moving around and 1 day in Rome. Take a train (or hire a driver) into Rome. However, This will add another 1.5 hours to the day each way (and the regional trains may be crowded).
2. Start with Rome (2 nights). Then 3 nights in Orvieto. If leaving from Orvieto, adds an extra hour compared to Rome - Cetara.
3. Start in Orvieto (3 nights) and then 2 nights in Rome. I'm not driving into Rome, so not sure this would work well. This does shorten the next leg.
Thank you
