The Rick Steves Rome Guidebook says that using a Roma pass for sites that have a combined entry ticket such as Colosseum/Palatine Hill/Forum count as a single entry so I'm assuming all three of these sites would count as one of the free entries if you used the pass first. This may sound like a silly question, but what is the procedure for using the pass at these sites? The book says to insert the pass in the turnstile, but do you do this at all three sites and still only get counted as one entry on the Roma card?
Melissa, we used the Roma pass last month. We never had a problem. Just insert the card at the turnstile or show the card and you walk in. It really is quite easy.
We went to the Colosseum first, then over to Palentine Hill. I asked the attendant and she said to just slide the pass through the turnstile again. We then used our second free entry at the Borghese with no trouble.
Not a silly question, it just sounded silly when I fumbled through it in bad Italian, so you're ahead of me! ;-)
We did have a slight problem going into the Colosseum after visiting the Forum the previous day. You may want to check that if you visit on different days (the Colosseum/Forum/Palatine Hill combo), do you have a certain time period that the pass must be used within (24 hours from the first visit)? We were still able to enter, but my daughter's pass would not go through and they had to let her through manually.
Melissa, the "Colosseo trio" DOES count as ONE of your TWO free sites. When you go the first day, say to the Colosseo, your Roma Pass is good until the next day at the other two segments (Palatine Hill and the Forum). All this still counts as one visit.
Sometimes the turnstiles do not read the cards... even if the card has never been used. Most of the time the attendants just wave you through, especially if you're with a group of folks whose cards all DID WORK! For more info on the Roma Pass,

The Roma pass is a great deal. Palentine Hill and Roman Forum are one entry. Colloseum is separate. You will want to go to the Colloseum first (because it is one of the most expensive). Even with the pass, there is a small line to get through security. After that, you will skip the line at the forum, which is just a small jump down the street. I recommend using these as your first stops with the Roma Pass, to save time and money.
