How to use our free day in Positano during our RST Best of South Italy tour in later October

We need some advice on what to do in and around Positano during our free day on Oct. 15th. This would not include a ferry/visit to Capri, which we plan on doing a couple days later when we have our free day in Sorrento. Although walking around Positano is nice, I think we would like to take a Bus/Taxi/Boat tour along the southern Amalfi Coast and view the spectacular scenery during our "free" day. What is the best way do this, given the somewhat chaotic bus schedule and the likely reduction of services that would start around this time?

Great time of year, and the closures really don’t start until Nov 1. Consider a trip up to Ravello to see the marvelous violas, Cimbrone and Rufolo. Amazing views! Easy to get there. Bus to Amalfi town and change to shuttle up to Ravello..

I would hop a bus and visit Amalfi town and then go to the cliff tops to get the spectacular vista of the coast from Ravello. In mid October the buses should be a bit less intimidating than at the height of the season.

Another vote for Amalfi and Ravello. Can't find a Fall 2018 bus schedule, but buses were running about hourly between Positano and Amalfi on the Spring 2018 schedule (March-May). The Fall schedule will likely be similar.

We would also encourage the trip to Amalfi (by ferry if possible) and then the local bus up to Ravello for the views, the Villa Rufolo ad the charming village. The local bus departs from the same bus area as the SITA buses, so check with the driver that it is the local going to Ravello. You can purchase tickets across from the bus stops in what I remember to be a newspaper/gift shop. If you have a clear, blue sky day like we did, it will be one of your favorite memories!

Wonderful question for me, since I'll be in Positano a week earlier on the same tour. We were also thinking of Ravello, since when we were on the Amalfi coast a few years ago, we were driving and couldn't find parking in Ravello other than a short-term meter, so we spent only about half an hour there, and I definitely want more time. It's good to learn that getting there by bus is easy, even with a change in Amalfi. Hadn't thought of taking a ferry to Amalfi, but sounds like a good idea. Presumably it's easy to find out the schedules for both ferries and busses online; are they likely to be available in late September? I would also think our guide could help.

To my fellow Ricksters on a tour, ask your tour guide for info on ferries and buses even before getting to Positano. The guides are a wealth of local information. They are there to help you have a great experience.

On my free day on the tour I enjoyed just having a relaxing day without rushing off to catch a bus and no schedule to follow. Mind I had been to Amalfi area before so didn’t feel any great need to visit again. Late breakfast, visit to a local hairdresser for much needed hair cut, wandering the shops but not buying anything, sitting on the beach, having lunch at a beachside restaurant. Stroll back to the hotel for a siesta. Bliss!

I just returned from the Amalfi coast and stayed in Praiano. I hiked up to the Path of the Gods out of Positano and the views are beautiful. I booked an entire afternoon for swimming and snorkeling with "ciao@frankieboattours.co. Frankie is fun and local. He drives his own water taxi and will take you to caves and just about anywhere you would like to go. I cancelled my Capri trip because he was taking me in ancient caves and I was allowed to swim. It was great!

Has anyone taken a taxi or driver from Positano to Ravello and back? What was the cost?

Will you have already spent time in Positano?? If not, that is totally worth a day to enjoy.

The coast is best viewed from the water and a ferry to Amalfi from Positano would be great as well.

If you like hiking there are terrific trails above Amalfi, including to Minuta, with amazing views of Ravello. The Path of the Gods hike is gorgeous: you could start in Positano.

Pfred: I'm guessing the cost would be at least 200E depending on where you want to go in Positano. We paid for a transfer from Ravello to Praiano and it was 90E.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, we have been to the Amalfi Coast before while staying in Sorrento. We are looking forward to staying in Positano, but Ravello seems inviting. Weather on the day will be a deciding factor. Taking the two buses with the warnings about crowds leads us to think you are correct about staying in Positano and just enjoying the coastline. I was thinking a Taxi might be an easier route than the bus.
