How to Travel The Amalfi Coast in 6 days

My husband & I are traveling to Sorrento, Capri, Positano this fall. We have 6 days total so I want to make the most efficient use of our time. We plan to start in sorrento & visit Pompeii etc.--staying 2 nights. But what should our next stop be? Positano for two nights? then Capri for two..then to Naples to catch the plane? Plan to travel by boat & rail mostly.

I would go Capri, Positano, Sorrento if you really want to stay 2 nites in each place. As was pointed out by Linda, you don't want to be out on Capri and face a delay in getting to Naples which could cause you to miss your flight. You can get to Capri either directly from Naples via ferry, or train to Sorrento and then ferry. Take the ferry Capri to Positano instead of Sorrento so you don't have to get up at the crack of dawn in order to get room on the bus along the Amalfi coast. Take the bus from Positano to Sorrento; since you'll be leaving in the morning you'll avoid the afternoon crush of people returning to Sorrento.

Since this is an advice forum I'm going to add that personally I would do 4 days in Sorrento and 2 in Capri; Positano is pretty small. But if you want to wake up on the cliffs overlooking the ocean and have some time for hikes or relaxing then Positano's your place. Also I suggest visiting Herculaneum; having been to both, I think it is better than Pompeii.

But we want to stay in capri & positano as well. We don't mind packing and moving....just need to know the best order of travel & easiest method of transportation in late august/early September.

Depends when in the fall you travel. The coastal boat services start shutting down begining of October. Sorrento to Capri and Sorrento to Naples services run, weather permitting, year round. You will need to check the Capri to Naples boat services, I am not familiar with them. The buses and trains will be running so you can still get around.

However, I would be wary of relying on the boat service from Capri to Naples to get you to the Airport on time. All it needs is bad weather and you are stuck. You may be ok but my stress levels couldn't cope! We were in Sorrento last October and it seemed that at least one crossing to Naples was canceled each day due to choppy seas.

Maybe Positano, Capri and Sorrento last, ok backtracking if you have to go to Capri from Sorrento rather than from Positano, but an hour at most. You could then catch the train (or the airport bus if flight times allow) from Sorrento to Naples.

Stay in Sorrento and take day trips from there. It is a much more efficient use of time. Everything is a very short car, bus, or ferry ride away from Sorrento.
