How to stop luggage for a day trip to Sorrento

My husband and I will be taking the train from Rome to Sorrento. We are wondering we can store our luggage at the train station and if so how much it would cost for the day. We would just like to go spend some time in Pompeii that afternoon before we take the ferry over and stay in Capri for the next few nights. Any advice this is our first trip to Italy so any advice would help

There is a deposito bagagli at the Pompei Villa dei Misteri station and also at the archeological site itself.
Don’t remember the cost since it has been a while, but it is not significant enough to worry about it.

You are aware that there are no direct trains from Rome to Sorrento? You will need to change at Napoli Centrale/Garibaldi station to the local Circumvesuviana commuter train. You will want to get off at the Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri station, which is right in front of the main entrance to the excavation. Pompeii is about 30 minutes or so from Naples, and it's another 30 minutes to Sorrento.

You'll purchase your tickets for the Circumvesuviana when you arrive in Naples; no seat reservations, and tickets must be validated before boarding. Same with tickets from Pompeii to Sorrento.

If you're just going to Sorrento to catch a ferry to Capri, then do Pompeii along the way, checking your luggage at the site.

Thanks Kathy! That helps. We were planning leaving Rome late morning early afternoon. If we take this train you suggested to Pompeii and just spend a few hours looking around is there a place we could store our luggage for free or cheap? Also what would you reccomend as transportation to get us to Sorrento so we can take the ferry to Capri that evening? Isn't there a subway from Pompeii to Sorrento then the ferry will leave from Sorrento to Capri? Thanks for your help!

I think you need to reassess your time constraints. Leaving Rome in the late morning to early afternoon will get you to Naples in time to make the transfer to the Circumvesuviano and into Sorrento, but you might be cutting it a little close if you want to do the Pompeii thing. By train, assuming a fast train and the Circumvesuviano connection is flawless (it seldom will be) will eat up 2 hours and 17 minutes. What time does your ferry leave in the evening? Assuming you want to spend at least 2 hours in Pompeii, you will have to hustle to get to Sorrento for an early evening ferry. In a perfect world, you might make the ferry, but this is Italy, and Mussolini is no longer in power guaranteeing that the trains run on time.

If you think it’s too close we could just go from Rome to Sorrento and stay there one night to see Pompeii then leave for Capri that next morning?

Thats what I would recommend. Go to Sorrento from Rome , leaving early. Stay 2 nights- one day for Pompeii and one day for Capri. Pompeii after leaving your luggae at hotel

We we planning on just staying in Sorrento just for one night since it’s a travel day then go stay in Capri for 2-3 nights. I want to spend some time there and it didn’t seem like a good idea to post up in Sorrento and pay for ferry back and forth every day

To those who in the XXI century still worship Mussolini's achievements, I’d like to remind that the story that Il Duce made the trains run on time is a myth that has long been debunked. It was just fake news spread by the regime who imposed to newspapers of the time to report such propaganda, or else.

Or you could go from Naples to Capri and day trip by ferry to the mainland for Pompeii?

Ah. OK. It wasn't clear that you were planning to stay a night versus going directly to Capri from Sorrento after Pompeii. There are any number of ways you could do this so it's up to preference, really.

If you want to visit the scavi from Sorrento, I'd probably check out early in the morning, have the hotel store your bags, and then head off to Pompeii, returning for your luggage before you catch the ferry. How much time you want to spend at the excavation is up to you but it's a VAST site; much larger than most first-timers believe it to be. It also get busier (and hotter) as the day goes on so I usually recommend being there at the opening hour versus the afternoon.

Thanks for everyones advice I think we are leaning towards hanging out in Rome a little bit longer that morning and not heading for Sorrento until that evening. We will stay one night there to rest and relax before leaving for Capri. It sounds like Pompeii is best to do in the morning so one option like mentioned is we may wake up early that morning and do it before we head to Capri while our hotel holds our luggage or we could skip the night in Sorrento and go straight to Capri and either do a day trip ferry to see it or see it on our way back before we catch a train to Florence? Any suggestions? How long does the ferry take to get back and forth from Capri to Sorrento. Do they have a ferry that goes directly from Capri to the extravasation site?

Sorry, no, there are no ferries to Capri or Sorrento from Pompeii.

How long does the ferry take to get back and forth from Capri to
Sorrento.

The ferry schedule website I gave you includes posted journey times: between 20-30 minutes Sorrento> Capri depending on specific craft. Editing to add: again, be aware that the ferry marinas in both Sorrento and Capri are located well below the towns so you'll probably want to take buses (fee) from the docks up to town and vice versa. We've walked to the docks but it's a puff coming back up, and you don't want to do that with luggage. There is also a funiculare (elevator of sorts) from the marina up to Capri town (fee).

Thanks Kathy. Some one had suggested just staying in Sorrento and doing day trips to Capri and alma coast...However my husband and I are young and I particularly love the beach and think we would really like actually staying in Capri.

If you haven't already, do some reading up about Capri beaches? The sandy sort, if that's what you are expecting, are very few, very small, and accessing some involve beach-club fees.

I hope you like cliffs and rocks as well, because you won’t find sandy beaches in Capri, or on the Amalfi Coast for that matter.

So after learning a little more about capri I'm beginning to worry that 3 nights there may be too much time for all that we had planned. We wanted to see the island and do a boat tour, do some hiking/chairlift, and see the grotto. However, I think almafi and positano would be neat to visit as well. Can we do day trips to these places from capri or would it be better to spend two nights in sorrento instead of one and go to these places from there and then only do 2 nights in capri?

If you decide to stay on Capri, I would not day-trip from there. Stay on the island only to explore the island itself. As hikers, we easily could have done 3 nights but did OK with only two. We stayed 3 nights in Sorrento for Pompeii, a 1/2 day trip to Positano, and to explore Sorrento itself.
