How to split 2 weeks in Florence, Assisi, Rome, Sorrento

We're planning our honeymoon to Italy for the beginning of November and want to go to the following cities in our 2 week trip: Florence, Assisi, Rome, Sorrento, Naples, & Pompeii. Right now we have it split up as 5 days Florence, 1 day Assisi, 4 days Rome, 3 days Sorrento and vicinity.

Does this sound reasonable/do-able? Do any sound too long or too short? We are both artists and want to see as much art as possible- that's why we're very interested in Florence but I'm not sure if it's too much time in one city. Would a day trip from Florence to Siena be easy?

Please help! :)

It's doable. I assume you're traveling by train? If so, you might be cutting Assisi a little short.
Also, it depends on what you want to see in Naples. I think you could peel a day from Florence.

You can stop in Pompeii on the way from Rome to Sorrento. You change trains in Naples to the Circumvesuviano which is essentially a suburban commuter train. Pompeii is on the way.

Congratulations on your wedding!

My personal preference would be to spend 1 less day in Rome and instead spend it in Sorrento. Get Rick's guide books, they're good. To quote him, "For most travelers, Rome is best done quickly. Time is normally short, and Italy is more charming elsewhere". From personal experience, I'd agree.

A day trip to Siena from Florence is easy; they have buses. Also spend an extra day based in Florence and do Assisi as a day trip. See http://www.assisionline.com/umbria_treniasus.html It's much easier as a traveler to have a home base and go there/back then spend more time packing up, traveling, getting to new destination, check in, etc, all for one day.

And the best artifacts from Pompeii are in the National museum in Naples. Consider going from Rome to Naples, visiting that museum, then catching the train to Sorrento. Use another day for Herculaeum and Pompeii from your base in Sorrento.

I am going to disagree with Mike of LA. I have been to the archeological museum in Naples and it is wonderful. I have not been to the actual Pompei and Herculaneum sites but several people I ran into (while there two months ago) spoke very, very highly of seeing those sites.

Thank you! Yes, we do have ALL of Rick's Italy guidebooks for the areas that we want to visit but I just wasn't sure the timing that we should have since the Italy book says to do Florence in a day...that seems silly to me as most of what I want to see is in Florence. Assisi is a MUST stop for us as I have been dreaming for many many years to visit the Giotto paintings there and the guidebook says that an overnight stay is very very charming. I want to be sure to get some of those small villages in and experience the culture a bit.

I think that we will do a day trip to Siena, as suggested, and then visit Naples & Pompeii while staying in Sorrento.

Thank you so much!!!

For planning purposes I usually count NIGHTS rather than DAYS in a location. So two nights in Assisi would give you one whole day plus part of another day. If this is your first trip to Italy it may be difficult to know in advance exactly what to plan, but I would suggest staying in Florence 3-4 nights with a possible side-trip to a hilltown, 3-4 nights in Rome with plenty to do there, 3-4 nights in Sorrento with sidetrips to Capri or Amalfi Coast plus a daytrip to Pompeii and Naples. Siena could rate 2-3 nights. You don't want to turn your two weeks into a marathon of running here and there. In two weeks, I personally would not try to get to all these places. Get comfortable someplace and relax a little; after all, this is your honeymoon!

I was thinking about my post and want to revise it a bit because a nite in a hill-town shows you a charming part of Italy you won't see in the bigger cities or on the Amalfi coast. In the early evening when the day tourists have left and you're wandering around you can almost sense the ghosts of inhabitants from centuries past, and you're seeing the same buildings they saw.

So what I'd suggest is an open-jaw trip. Since you're artists you want to be fully adjusted to time differences when in Florence, so start at the other end in Naples. Fly into Naples, train or hydrofoil to Sorrento and use those days as relaxing time to get adjusted while visiting the ruins. The last morning leave early to Naples, check your bags, explore the museum and environs, then take the train to Rome. After a few days leave Rome in the late afternoon to spend 2 nites in Assisi, then on to Florence. Fly home from there.

We spent 34 days in Italy in 2004 and another 15 in 2006. It was our honeymoon, too (actually, the 33d and 35th honeymoons). If we can offer one piece of advice, it is that you should spend more time in one place and less traveling and reorienting. We would recommend Rome and side trips from there and Sorrento and trips from there. Rome is not to be missed and Sorrento is very close to some fascinating sites, like Pompeii,Ercolano and Vesuvius, as well as Napoli

I think your plan is very good. I traveled most of Italy and Florence had the most to offer, I stayed there for two weeks and I wasn't able to see everything, just make sure to find a good place to stay there, I know people who just hated it merely because the place they stayed at wasn't good. Don't let this ruin your experience.

Oh my gosh! Congrats on the nuptuals and have a blast in Italy. My Husband and I went there for our honeymoon, we were blessed to a whole month. I totally agree about making your homebase Rome and Sorrento. Naples is ok, but I would suggest not staying there. Pompeii is AMAZING. You should certainly spend the day wandering the whole place. If you can spare a day, go to Capri! It is a wonderful little island and sunbathing on the rocks or going to see the blue grotto is beyond relaxing.

Florence is by far my favorite city. We are going back this year with my hubby's parents for 2 weeks.

Congats again and have fun! The people are awesome and the country is beautiful!

We were recently in Florence for 6 nights. We easily did all museums and walk around sites in 3 full days. We even did out of the way museums including the Pitti Palace and Boboli Gardens. The longest item was 2.5 hours in the Ufizzi. The only thing we didn't do was the 463 stairs to the top of the Duomo. We strongly recommend the Duomo museum behind il Duomo. We spent 90 minutes in there. They have the original "gates to Paradise" in there plus some Michelangelo and Donatello works. 3 days - that's it. From Florence, we did a one day trip down to Assisi. We should have stayed a night there and spent a long full day. It was really stunning. (Hint on Assisi. From the train station, take the Line C bus to the top and walk down. Guide books suggest going to the Basilica first and walking up. Going down is much better). We also took a one-day trip to Siena. We wish we could have spent an evening there as well. I suggest that 3 days, 4 nights in Florence could do it.

Was in Rome in May 2007 for my first time, we did a day trip to Naples/Pompeii and one to Florence. We wish we had done more time around the Amalfi Coast. Congratulations, enjoy your big day and your honeymoon (both go by very quickly).
