My husband & I will be spending a week on Lake Como Oct 6-13. We have 2 weeks to spend away & I would like suggestions on how best to spend that extra week, whether to divide it up, spending a few days before & a few days after our week on L. Como or a full week before or after. We have not yet purchased our plane tickets. Where should we fly into & out of? We like natural scenery, food, wine, history, architecture, people, etc. Thanks for your suggestions. Ann
You have some options. I assume you'll fly in/out of Milan. Avoid Milan... It's reasonable to spend a few days in Venice, come back through Verona and then enjoy Milan.
Ugh. I meant Lake Como...
Venice is lovely and I'm sure you would enjoy it. If you think you may be all 'watered' out by then you could head down to Florence. These is so much to see and do there. If you are driving take time to visit the towns along they way, particularly Siena. Flying in and out of Milan sounds a good idea.
I would split my time between in the north, Venice and the stunning beauty at the dolomites (Italian alps.). It would be better to have a car in the dolomites or take a tour and stay for min 2 nights. You can return your car in Mestre minutes from Venice, then train it back to Milan to fly out. Lucky you. Save the remaining parts of gorgeous Italy for other trips.
You are well-placed at Lake Como to visit lots of places. Venice,Verona,Vicenza,Lake Garda are all on the train line from Milan. Milan itself (dont waste time there except to get trains elsewhere) is only about 40 mins by train south of the Lake. We highly recommend Verona and Garda.
