How to spend a Day in Bologna including Ducati

Traveling via train from Florence to Venice in October, and will be stopping in Bologna to see the Ducati museum.
Sadly, the Factory Tour is unavailable during my visit, so I am limited to the Museum.
I'm planning to leave my luggage at the KiBag in the Bologna train station, take the train to Ducati, spend about an hour or two in the museum, and then take the train back to Bologna Centrale, eventually catching an afternoon train to Venice.

What other sights/suggestions do you have for an afternoon in Bologna???
TIA!

How much time would you spend in central Bologna post-museum, given you're eventually returning to the station for an afternoon train to Venice?

Given that short amount of time, experience what makes Bologna popular: food.

Eat lunch at Sofoglia Rina, wander the Quadrilatero food shops and stalls, and savor a Bolognese spritz at Bar Vittorio Emanuele while gazing at landmarks and passerbys in the Piazza Maggiore.

With a few hours I would walk the colonnades down Via Indipendenza to Piazza del Nettuno and explore the square and Basilica di San Petronio. Then I would check out the Quadrilatero and have something to eat either in one of the surrounding restaurants. Either something serious or sample the famous meat and cheese plates - be sure to try the crescentina fritta - and that should fill the time nicely. Then head back to the train station.

Have a great trip,

Thanks for the recommendations!

Yes, train/bus to the museum...my wife is a bit more, er, frugal, than I am ;)
Maybe we'll take public transportation to there and a taxi back.

If you take a regional train from Bologna Centrale to Museo Ducati, you'll:

  1. wait, board and depart
  2. walk, wait, hop on & off bus and walk
  3. waste money, time and effort

You'll only be in Bologna for a handful of hours. Be sensible and cab it!

Note: You do realize it's best to take a taxi from the museum to the city center and from the city center to the station, correct?

In support of the OP's original plan to take public transportation, the Ducati museum web site shows the train or suburban tram as taking 10 minutes versus 20 minutes for the more expensive taxi.

If you end up with a little extra time in Bologna, or if you want escape crowds in the center, the Santo Stefano complex of churches is quite interesting and easily walkable.
