Hello, I have limited time in this area of Italy. What would be recommended as a place or places to stay and see in these regions? I will have a car for a portion of the time to see the countryside.

By 5 days, do you mean 4 nights? If so, I would choose one centrally located place and do day trips.

Day 1 - Day in Florence, then bus or train to Siena (4 nts)
Day 2 - Morning in Siena, pick up rental car, afternoon drive thru Chianti
Day 3 - Excursion to San Gimignano (+Volterra)
Day 4 - Excursion to Cortona (+Arezzo)
Day 5 - Drive to Orvieto (1 nt) via Montepulciano, drop off rental car
or

I would spend three nights in Tuscany and two nights in Umbria. A few years ago my friends and I used Suena and Assidi as our bases and took daytrips.

Cortona is a good central location for day trips to both Umbria and Tuscany. Todi in Umbria can be also, Orvieto and Assisi are also fine. The distances are very great and you can see a lot in one day with a car. Not to worry.
