How to see Bramante staircase

We are visiting Rome in May and planning to spend one day at Vatican City. We are doing the scavi tour in the afternoon and planning to visit the museums and Sistine Chapel in the morning. We have not decided yet whether we want to see the museums on our own with an audio guide or with the guided tour which is offered on the Vatican's website. Whatever the case be, we were certain that we will see Bramante staircase when we go there. But we just read online that they are not open to the public? Does anyone here have information on how to visit this place? Thanks!

Technically, there are two "Bramante" staircases, the original one, and the modern one that is in the main entrance area of the museums. You can see the latter one, but it may be closed to foot traffic.
