How to reach Fiumicino Airport from Vatican City

Hi,

We will attend the Papal Audience on Nov 6 at 930am and we have a flight at 4pm on the same day.

Please i need your suggestions on how to reach the airport from Vatican City. Do you think 1pm departure from Vatican is enough for our 4pm flight?

thanks

I think it would be cutting it very close. It takes at least 30 minutes to get there, assuming no traffic, I would think.

If you are traveling back to US, you will need plenty of time to get through all the hoops at the Rome airport.

Is the flight a return flight to the US? If it is and at that time of day you need to be in the airport by 1 pm. You can go to the St. Peter's station next to the Vatican and catch the local train to the airport -- about 20, 25 minutes plus some waiting time. A bigger problem will be handling your luggage. I don't think there is luggage storage at the station. Buy your ticket the day before and check the schedule so that you don't waste time buying tickets or waiting too long.

Hi Rizell and Frank,

Thanks for your quick reply. Im flying from Rome to Vienna at 4pm on Nov 6. I think the Papal Audience will commence at 1030am and it will end until 12nn (not so sure).

Im having second thought if i will consider attending the Papal Audience if the time is too tight but this event is once a lifetime opportunity for us.

thanks

For a flight to Vienna you should be there no later than 2
Are you checking bags? What will you do with bags while at St. Peter’s?

Taxi should be flat rate 48 euros

Being a domestic flight, being there by 1400 should be adequate. However, at that time of day the airport can get pretty crowded. I would not cut it any closer than that. Leaving around 1300 Taking a taxi would work but you need to find a taxi stand or hotel. Taxis do not respond to being hailed on the street as you might do in New York or Chicago.

There is a train from Roma Trastevere station to Fiumicino every 30 minutes at 21 and 51 past the hour on a Sunday. Costs 8 EUR and takes 27 minutes.

You could also take a connecting train from San Pietro station just south on the Vatican, but because the change time at Trastevere station is over 30 minutes, journey time is 1 hour and 5 minutes.

Hi Cristine,

We only have small hand carry bag not even with wheels. It's quiet inconvenient to carry these bags while attending the Papal Audience though. We will try though.

I hope we can leave Vatican around 12nn just enough for the 4pm flight to Vienna.

For your itinerary, the wisest option would be to take a taxi to the aiport at the fixed rate mentioned above. The taxi stand at Piazza del Risorgimento, about a 10 minute walk from St. Peter's Square, is probably your best bet. Baring an unexpected traffic delay, it would take you longer to get to a train station and then take a train to the airport.
