How to pack clothing-wise for Florence & Rome for late November?

We are planning to travel to Florence & Rome around Thanksgiving time, and wondered how we should pack. Will it be warm enough to wear sweaters and then rain coat if necessary?

In addition to your normal tops and bottoms bring two light sweaters and a rain shell. In a pinch, you can wear both sweaters and a top or two and survive just about anything. In early November, the days were warm and nights cool enough to want one light sweater - I'm not sure how much it cools down by the end of the month.

Basically I needed my winter gear in Florence: a thin gortex jacket (that runners wear to run in the winter), jeans, boots, 2 long-shirt layers, scarf at night. Temps were in the 30's. In Rome, 2 long sleeve layers, jeans, boots. Temps were in the 60's, but cool/cold at night. My gortex is water resistant but still never left my hotel without an umbrella. My boots are what I would consider to be winter walking boots, also water resistant. My feet were never cold or wet. We were in Italy Nov 25-Dec 8th.

Derry is about a thousand nautical miles from Rome and is affected by different climatic factors and weather systems.
