We would like to go to Volterra for the day from Florence. My husband who doesn't read the forums wants to rent a car to drive there. I have told him about the ZLT's and I don't want to get a fine. I would rather take the train/bus, but it looks really difficult to get to Volterra that way. Is there somewhere to rent a car outside the zone? We will be staying at Hotel Alessandra in July.
You can rent a car through AutoEurope.com or Hertz.com and pickup the car at 53 Via del Sansovino, 1 mile NW of the train station. That's outside the ZLT, and they can give you directions to Volterra that doesn't take you through the ZLT. Mapquest.com also has good maps of the Hill Country and Chianti. On your way back, don't forget to see San Gimgnano, which is on the way. The Tuscan countryside is breathtaking, and worthy of rambling along the way. Another option is to catch a bus next to the train station. It should take approximately 1 1/2 hrs. to get there.
David, I took your advice and looked at Auto Europe at that location. They said that there were no cars available for that date or time. We may look at tours through Ron in Rome's sight. Thanks for your help.
