We want to fly from NYC to either Rome or Sardinia directly but not sure how to get there. Planning to go at beginning of June. Also where to stay in Sardinia for the beaches and not too secluded from town.

IMO, your question is too broad. Check Google Flights for airlines, start reading about Sardinia, decide your flight destination, and then this forum can help you better.

I have posted a lot of info and comments on Sardinia in the last year or so in this forum. Use the search box above. Enter Sardinia and all those posts will come up.
There are no direct flights from North America to Sardinia. You need to connect somewhere in Europe.
Check a search engine.
Look for the following airports:
OLB in the north
CAG in the south
There is also AHO, but it is used only by RyanAir, I think.
The top destinations are on the northern half of the island.
Most flights are seasonal summer only, but many should operate by June.
