Is it easy to get to Pompeii by train from Naples? Or can anyone recommend a driver/guide service for the day in Pompeii. How long a drive by car would it be from Naples to Pompeii? It is, apparently, a 2 1/2 train ride.
Circumvesuviana train.
25+ minutes ride not 2.5 hours.
Stations are:
NAPOLI PORTA GARIBALDI
POMPEI SCAVI-Villa dei misteri
TIMETABLE

It is easy, and it is less than an hour--not sure where the 2 1/2 came from.

Wow - thank you! I must have misread the 2 1/2 hours! Or maybe it was an old guidebook. Anyway, thanks so much for the schedule!
The 2.5 hours could be the total time to get from Rome to Pompeii. That is a frequent question. Take the train it very close to door to door -- cheap and easy.
Claudia, this is a commuter kind of service, with no advance purchase or reservations needed. (If convenient, you can buy tickets at a newsdealer early for everyone both ways, but you need to know the zone-fare for that distance, or engage with the newsdealer.) There is a real ticket booth downstairs in the Naples station. Elsewhere it's the nearest newsdealer. Validate before boarding.
This train is crowded and can be hot. Expect to stand in high season. Use the Search box hrer to read about the bad idea of driving in Naples, if you expect to have a car. Overall, this is a very simple independent journey. You can see the ticket area for Porta Marina entrance to Pompeii Scavi from the Circumvesuviana station there.
The Campania Express train, which some posters prefer, also stops at Pompeii. This seasonal train runs only a few times a day and costs more than the Circumvesuviana, but it's another option.
Thanks everyone!
