How to Get to Marco Polo Airport from Venice by 5 a.m. HELP?

Hi everyone,

We booked our hotel at Hotel Antiche Figure across the street from Santa Lucia station which is supposed to be a 5 minute walk from Pizzale Roma. My fiance tells me we need to be at the airport at 5 a.m. to check-in and I'm at a loss for what to do at that time of day. I know the ATVO express buses do not even start until 5 a.m. I heard you can take a land taxi from Piazzale Roma. Is this true? If so how much do taxis cost? I know water taxis are super expensive and I'd like to stay away from paying 100 euros if possible.

Any suggestions are helpful. Thanks!

Heidi, Piazzale Roma is the only place in Venice you can reach by road. If you can get there on foot, you should be able to get a taxi to the airport.

You say "across the street from Santa Lucia station". That cannot be true as there are no streets in Venice, the only road access is the causeway which leads to Piazzale Roma. What is in front of the station is the Grand Canal.
See photo of the front of the station here: http://l450v.alamy.com/450v/f55r7a/grand-canal-santa-lucia-railway-station-cannaregio-venezia-venice-f55r7a.jpg

It is only 5 minutes from the station to Piazzale Roma, over a footbridge over the canal

Could you change your reservation and book a hotel at the airport for the night before you fly home? That may relieve some stress....

Chris, I don't need a snarky remark from you to correct me when I said across the street instead of across the canal. You didnt need to post a picture of the water as I am well aware of what the Grand Canal looks like. Furthermore, while you were looking that up, you can clearly see what I meant as my hotel is still directly across from Santa Lucia Station.

Hi Heidi:

You might was to also check what time the check in counters open. I say this because I was flying out of Paris and got there before 6:00am and the check in counters did not open until 6:30. I was however the first person in line :-)

Also check with you hotel, they may be able to order a taxi for you.

There are two kinds of buses to the airport---ACTV and ATVO. One does start running at 4:20 am. Kathy posted the link to the schedule.

Heidi,
The ATVO express bus leaves from Piazzale Roma at 4:20. We took that bus just last month, so I know it leaves at that time. It was fast, arriving at the airport by 4:45. I would definitely use them again. Just be sure that it's the ATVO (blue) bus, not the ACTV. Also, you would probably want to purchase your tickets in advance since I don't think you can buy them on the bus. Their office is located on Piazzale Roma. I had a little difficulty finding it at first, but just walk around the perimeter and you'll find it. They also have a machine in front of their office, but personally I wouldn't trust that if I had an early flight to catch.

My flight was scheduled to leave at 7:45. I will tell you that if you are flying on British Airways, they didn't open their counter until about 5:20. Their staff arrived at the desks a little after 5:00 and took 20 minutes to get ready to help people. Other airlines were already up and running when we arrived on the bus. Hope this info helps. Have a great trip.

On our first trip to Venice we took a land taxi from Pizzale Roma to VCE. It was quick and easy with no trouble. The cost was about 40E, If I remember correctly but that was over a decade ago. On our last trip we took the bus from to VCE from Pizzale Roma. I don't recall what time it left but we were at the airport by 5:00 AM at any rate. I think the bus made a couple of stops but it was also an easy trip and inexpensive. For your own piece of mind you might walk over to the lot and check it out a day or two before your flight, just to get your bearings. Good luck.
