6 of us are going to take the train from Milan to Bolzano on May 30. I cannot see a train schedule that works for us. I know we have to change trains at Verona, but then I don’t see a train after 0800....we are eventually going to Ortisei so we also need to allow for bus time from Bolzano to Ortisei. Can anyone help?
What web site are you using? I am seeing departures every half hour until 9:45, then a gap until 11:25, then about every 20 minutes until late afternoon.
Lefrecce.it
What website should I be on? I would like to have minimal stops, and not leave Milan too early. Also, How far in advance should I book it? Thank you!
You need to include Regionali in on the mix. But with Freccia and Eurocity trains only, I am seeing departures at 8:15, 9:45, and 12:05. There are later ones, but you want to catch a bus to Ortisei and so you want a morning departure. They all take 3 to 3 1/2 hours with a train change at Verona Porta Nuova station.
It is already May 14, so you should book now. The 8:15 and 9:45 departures are about 220 EUR total for 6. the 12:05 departure is about 185 EUR for 6. Prices will only go up. These are nonrefundable train specific tickets, 2nd class.
I am using this website.

When you search itineraries, it goes to lefreccia.it
Ues this site http://www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en. 9:45 departure should serve you well. It arrives 13:14. Buses to Ortisei with no change required depart Bolzano Stazione at 14:12, 15:12, 15:28. Or you can take a train/bus combo through Ponte Gardena at 13:32, 14:02, 15:02. Use this site http://www.sii.bz.it/en/siipdfOldtimetables and plug in Bolzano Stazione and Ortisei Piazza S. Antonio.
FWIW the buses are nice enough but the past two trips we have taken a taxi. Very welcome after a day of travel. We arrange for it in advance and he meets us at the station. Euro 85 to Ortisei last fall. http://www.taxi-ivan.com/eng/index.htm
Thank you, and should we arrive at the train station 30 min prior to departure?
Also, We have not booked our train tickets to get from the airport to the Milan hotel (noon on May 28). should I do that now as well?
I would buy those tickets when you get to the airport train station. You never know if your plane will arrive on time or if there will be a delay getting though immigration or getting your luggage. Trains are every 30 minutes to Centrale, or to Cadorna if that is where your hotel is. They alternate on a 15 minute schedule.
