I see pictures from here all the time and the view looks amazing...is it walkable? Bus?
awesome thanks I like the idea of walking
It's a lovely walk or you can take bus #12.
Google on " Piazzale Michelangelo Florence" and select the google map. Then get "directions to" next enter the address of your lodging, select walking as opposed to by car or public transit and you will have the directions you want.
We walked; it's a good little hike, as of course it's on top of a hill. At one point, you can choose to keep walking on the street or take a big ol' bunch of stairs, which we did. So if you walk, you need to be able to do hills and stairs.
Only thing I regret is that we did not go there at sundown. I MEANT to, but I was really tired and we were kind of moseying around. My friend called it by another name (mispronounced it) when she said "let's go there", and in my fog, I went along. When we got there, I realized where we were and thought, "OH NO! We're a good 4 hours too early!!"
The view is fantastic and seeing it at sundown would have been spectacular!
take bus #12 or #13. I usually catch them across the street from the train station. However, look at the signs posted at bus stops to learn which bus # stops there.
Buon viaggio,
RB
thanks for the tips. We are staying not far from the train station....perfect.....bus up and then walk down maybe just to save some time
We saw Bus #13 go by our hotel on Piazza del Republica (central location in the city center) several times during the day and caught it to get to the Piazzale. We got there just before sunset then got on bus #13 to go back to our hotel. It stopped at the SMN bus terminal but we didn't get off because we expected it to go on to our hotel area. It did not. It went way north before we realized we were going the wrong way. I guess the bus was going off duty.
It was gorgeous at sunset. There is a nice little outdoor cafe with stunning views---just down the hill from the parking lot where the bus drops you off or at the top of the walk up.
Just a "few" more steps and take in San Miniato...a real gem. We happened in during a choir perfoming Gregorian chant!
Yes, do continue the rest of the way up to San Miniato! I, too, happened upon the chanting monks, and it was the best thing about a trip that was loaded with wonders. The church is well worth seeing, even without the brothers.
The stairs up the hill are pretty interesting, too. They're marked with the stations of the cross, and there's a well-populated cat sanctuary along the way.
I want to second the 'few more steps' up to San Mineato! It is a gem to see and a breathtaking place in general. I regret we missed the Sunday gregorian chants...try finding a website and getting times. It must be simply the BEST thing!

Janet, it is pretty amazing. I was there on a weekday around 5pm.... about 2 years ago. I didn't know there were chants going on but I stumbled upon them. San Miniato is lovely and the chants down at the back were simply haunting!
