How to get from Venice airport to Piazzale Roma

Hello,

I haven't been to Venice in about ten years so my memories have faded. Also, this time I'll be flying into Marco Polo Airport rather than arriving at the train station.

What is the best way to get to Piazzale Roma from the airport? I'll be staying near the Campo Santa Margherita. I'd prefer not to take an expensive water taxi.

Thanks.

The # 5 bus goes from the airport front door about every 15 minutes. You can get a combined bus+boat ticket for a discount so you can get a vaporetto to close to Campo Santa Margherita. There is also another frequent bus that has a luggage hold but is not part of public transport system so you have to buy a separate vaporetto ticket.

Since it's been 10 years since you visited Venice, I want to warn you that the vaporetto fare is now 9.50 per ride. Take a look at the passes available to see whether one of them will save you money:

24 hours: 25 euros
48 hours: 35 euros
72 hours: 45 euros
168 hours (1 week): 65 euros

In addition, you can add a one-way airport bus ticket to the passes for 7 EUR or 13 EUR for a two-way ticket, a 3 EUR savings for a one-way and 7 EUR for a two-way ticket.

Thank you for all sharing all this information. I didn't think it would involve several, not all simple possible solutions. I've been looking at maps of the city and its layout.

Sorry I didn't make it clear. I don't really need to save money, though I'll be in Venice (Dorsoduro) for 22 days. I'm just really interested in the easiest way to get to Piazza Reale after a long plane trip Seattle - Frankfurt - Venice.

My landlady wrote to me via WhosApp or the plaform I rented through ways of getting to the apartment but I wasn't able to find the message. I had read through it but was still not very clear. I asked her again yesterday to send me directions but haven't heard from her yet. She had mentioned a water taxi (from where exactly?).

Previous guests/tenants had mentioned that she had met them somewhere. Addresses in Dorsoduro, apparently, do not have street numbers. I don't recall if she suggested meeting at Campo Santa Margherita.

I'd like to have a clear notion of how to get there way before I leave Seattle.

bus to P.le Roma and then vaporetto to nearest Grand Canal or Giudecca Canal stop (Zattere).

But like everything in Venice, there is more than one way to do most things. I wouldn't do what I said for money saving, I'd do it for speed and views and because I can never have too much vaporetto riding.

VCE to Piazzale Roma: in December, my family took the non-stop ATVO coach bus: https://www.atvo.it/en-venice-airport.html
Has unlimited wifi and your bags go underneath and is a tiny bit quicker than the regular ACTV bus that makes stops. Use the app Che Bateo and also Google Maps to figure out where in the big sprawling busy Piazzale Rome you need to walk to in order to be on the dock to get the vaporetto you need.

Not wanting to deal with bus+Piazzale Roma+ vaporetto is probably why people go with the much more expensive but more simple water taxi option. My family all (even the six-year-old) likes to figure things out for themselves, so our son and his family did the "more steps but sort of more fun" bus+vaporetto way in December last year.

But for you, it is a lot to deal with coming from Seattle and especially when not having an apartment host who is maybe not as helpful as almost all of ours have been. I hope she answers you soon. I also hope that your flight arrives in the morning or midday so that you have time to manage it all without the added pressure of it getting dark.

The part I do not know is whether you can buy a vaporetto pass (highly recommended!) at Piazzale Roma or you have to walk a short way to the booths in front of the train station to buy a pass.

^^^^ This

It ain’t rocket surgery. Don’t stress

By Land: Take the Bus to Piazzale Roma. Then buy a ticket to hop on the appropriate Vaporetto to get to your destination

By Water: https://www.alilaguna.it/en. (BONUS: you don’t have to get off and transfer since it stops right at Ca. Rezzonico, which is near your place)

Water transport in Venice.
1. Gondolas. Only for pleasure, not for transport. 80 euro for half an hour for the boat, more for evenings.
2. Traghetto – big gondolas, two oarsmen, about ten passengers, for crossing the Grand Canal. Found at Rialto, San Toma and a couple of other places. Cost 2 euro per trip, can save a heap of walking.
3. Water taxis, which are like a floating limo, costs to match.
4. Vaporettos - ACTV. Are waterbuses, operate on a bunch of routes. Get the app Chebateo for routes and schedules. Vaps do not service the airport. Vaps are not water taxis.
5. Alilaguna ferries, service the airport, run from Marco Polo via a bunch of stops to the main part of Venice, Murano and Lido. They stop at some, but by no means all, vaporetto stops. Google for route maps.

As Chris mentioned above, the alilaguna from the airport will drop you at the vaporetto dock near you are staying. It’s 15 euros one way, but you can buy a return ticket. You can purchase your ticket at a machine near the baggage pick up area, but last time I was there they weren’t working properly so I walked through the doors and bought my tickets from an actual person, and was also able to buy a vaporetto pass for my entire stay, also. There are two lines for the alilaguna so pick the one that stops nearest to where you are staying.

Alilaguna is my least favorite way to arrive in Venice. Low, salt covered windows and you may be on the boat for a while as it makes other stops picking up and taking on other passengers. Plus the boat dock is a bit of a way from the airport, although there is now a land bridge with a moving walk way.

Bus, on the other hand, is right outside the front door of the airport.

If you no nominate the address of your apartment, people can give advice. Otherwise everyone is guessing.

If it is near Campo Margherita, Alilaguna to CaRezzonico may make sense.

Buy a PAPER map at the airport.

Hope that helps.

Google Maps direction.

Take bus from front door of airport to Piazzale Roma. You can buy ticket from dispenser near the front door.

Walk 9 minutes 650 metres from bus stop to your accomodations.

A vaporetto from Piazzale Roma is a waste of your time and money. The nearest stop is still an 8 minute 600 metre walk to your accomodations.

OK, too easy.
Take the Alilaguna Orange line ferry to Ca Rezzonico.
Walk up Calle del Traghetto to Campo San Barnaba.
Walk diagonally across the campo.
Walk past the Bar de Pugni.
Continue along beside the canal.
Cross the bridge
Walk as far as you can, then turn left.
You will reach the church of the Carmini
Cross the bridge in front of the church.

And you are at your front door.

Definitely get the Venezia Unica card as suggested above. It has a five year validity, and you “load” it with vaporetto and bus rides. Get it at the ACTV office at Piazale Roma, you need your passport r ID as the card is personalised with your name and photo.

Thanks everyone for sharing their thoughts.

I'm going to have to decide which plan to follow when I get there, but I'll re-read this thread (several times) before.

I don't really need to save money...just really interested in the easiest way to get to Piazza Reale after a long plane trip....

The easiest way is to simply take a land taxi to P. Roma and the vaporette from there.

I will take the nonstop ARVO BUS to P. Réale. It seems the easiest. My host says it’s a six minute walk and says she’ll meet me there and message her when I arrive.

Denny, there is no Piaza Reale in Venice. Maybe autocorrect is bringing you undone. Train your computer to love Roma.

Thanks Mary for the information link. I have all these things to remember buzzing in my mind, especially after consulting various travel guides. It is Piazalle Reale I need to get to, and that ATVO airport bus sounds like a good bet. I'm hoping my landlord will meet me there after I make contact with her on my smartphone once I arrive, as the place is only 6-7 minutes away.

I'm leaving in about a week...

There seem to be a number of different vaporetto passes, which I'll definitely use as I'll be staying three weeks.
