How to get from Santa Lucia train station to vaporetto boats to Sestiere Dorsoduro, 2406

Hello,

I traveling first time to Italy and arriving from the airport to the Stazione Venezia Santa Lucia train station . I need to get a Vaporetto to take to Sestiere Dorsoduro, 2406 and have no idea how or which Vaporetto to take. Also, can vaporetto tickets be purchased at the train station or manned ticket booth?

Any help or advise would be very much appreciated!

You may find it easier just to walk from the train station. When I google Sestriere Dorsoduro 2406, i get a location in the center of one of the islands that is far from any vaporetto dock, and just as close to the train station as any other way.

Sam: You beat me to it with the same idea.

You come out the front door of the train station. Turn right and there will be a big arch bridge the next block over--about 150 yards. Go over that bridge. Then walk to the left and start following the blue dots on the map listed below. Your hotel is on too small of a canal to have a vaporetto stop.

First, let's be sure we're talking about the same place. Find your place on a map on your computer, zoom in a little and confirm that it's almost straight across a canal from a 2-star hotel, La Dolce Vita, and the little street to the left of your place is called Calle del Guardiani. Correct?

If I have the right spot, I don't think a vaporetto will help you much in terms of distance to be walked, but riding to the San Basilio vaporetto stop will reduce the number of little hump-backed bridges you have to cross, and that's very worthwhile when you have luggage with you.

How are you getting to Venezia Santa Lucia? The buses from the airport go to Piazzale Roma, I think. I'm not sure about the Alilaguna boats and water taxis, because I've never taken either.

I need for others to check me on this: It looks like the easiest way to get from Santa Lucia to San Basilio is to get the Line 2 vaporetto heading in the direction of the Lido. It appears San Basilio will be the 5th stop. Alternatively, you could walk across the long, potentially slippery Constitution Bridge from the train station to Piazzale Roma and take Line 6, also in the direction of the Lido. That will be a shorter ride, with San Basilio being the 2nd stop.

There are multiple boarding platforms in front of Santa Lucia and probably also in front of Piazzale Roma. There are signs indicating which line stops at which platform. If you're ever in doubt, say the name of the stop you want in a questioning tone to the employee managing the loading process. He or she will nod "yes" or "no" so you don't get on the wrong boat.

The current map of vaporetto lines can be found here: https://www.venice.nu/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/mappalineedinavigazione-OTTOBRE2023web.pdf. You may also want to download the app CheBateo, which will provide directions for later movement around the city.

Important: Individual vaporetto tickets are exorbitantly expensive at 9.50 euros each. Many visitors find it saves money to buy a pass. Passes are priced as follows:

24 hours: 25 euros
48 hours: 35 euros
72 hours: 45 euros
168 hours (7 days): 65 euros

Looks like an airbnb. It is on Calle dei Guardiani. I see several doors marked 2406 E, 2406 D, 2406 C, etc.
Venetian street addresses have no apparent rime or reason. For each sestriere, the numbers are just in the order they were entered in the district registry back in the day when Napoleon took over the city and reorganized it. Before then, there were no street addresses at all.

It looks like acraven dropped a number. 7 day vaporetto pass is €65.

How long are you staying in Venice? A pass is well worth the money. Remember to validate it every time you take the vaporetto. You can go out to Burano and Murano. The Grand Canal at night gives the city a whole different view; lights reflecting on the water. If you download RS Audio App there is a vaporetto tour of the Grand Canal.

Thanks, horsewoofie. I've fixed it. What a bargain that would have been.

Acraven, yes that would have been a bargain. I’ll be in Venice for 5 nights the end of August. After I booked I found out the Historic Regatta is the last day of my visit so that will be entertaining and something different to enjoy.

Horsewoofie, I might be wrong as there might be two regattas. But if it is the same one we experienced, none of the vaporetti will be running for most of the day, so be prepared to do a lot of walking.

I've read that the regattas do affect vaporetti, so that would be a good day to plan to visit nearby sights.

I wonder whether they attempt to maintain a bit of service to the islands, since you cannot get to them by any amount of walking. I'm thinking about Giudecca, Lido, Murano, Burano, etc.

Thank you so much to everyone who gave recommendations. This is all great information and very helpful. The location on the maps a few of you posted is correct, so I guess it's on a little island that Vaporetto's can't get to. It seems the best way would be to get on Vaporetto Line No. 2 from Santa Lucia station and get off 4-5 stops later at San Basilio and walk the rest of the way. Thank you again! I'm sure I'll be posting more questions about other stuff. :)

Update - because the Vaporetto doesn't go on the small canal to our AirBNB, we decided to stay somewhere else that may be easier to get to. I looked up direction from Stazione train station to San Marco 3919, Venezia 30124. Am i correct in understanding that we would walk from the station to Ferrovia "B" and take Line 2 to Rialto and then walk the rest of the way, appx 10 minutes? The blue walking dots stop before Ferrovia "B", so does it keep going or am I not understanding the map?

I am not an expert on vaporetto routes; I mostly walk in Venice. But I think for your new location you'd do better to take Line 1 to San Angelo; it's much closer to your lodging and will not leave you with three bridges to cross. From the Google map, it looks as if you may be able to board Vaporetto 1 from a different dock outside the train station, closer to the door. You'll want a boat headed toward the Lido, not toward Piazzale Roma.

If the destination you show on the map is correct, you should take the No 1 boat from Ferrovia "E" to Sant'Angelo and it is just 100 yds from the dock, like a 2 minute walk.

And ChristineH ,makes a point, why are you going to the train station when you can just get the No 1 boat from Piazzale Roma where the airport bus drops you? You really want to start at Piazzale Roma "C".

The #1 starts at Piazzale Roma, so by all means board there where you will have a better choice of seats.

If you're arriving from the airport, the Alilaguna Orange line stops at Sant'Angelo

Back tracking up the thread a bit. Thanks TC and acraven for the Regatta vaporetto info. I reworked my itinerary to stay in Venice on the weekend of the Historic Regatta. Easy walks to sights and gelato and just enjoy the festivities.
