How to get from Rome - to - Castel Di Sangro - then - to Zurich?

  1. I have to travel from Rome to Castel Di Sangro. Can anyone tell me a website to find bus schedules? Also - what is the name of bus lines/routes to use?

  2. I've got to get from Castel Di Sangro (via Rome?) - to Zurich all in 1 day. Any suggestions welcome on best ways to travel are welcome.

Thank you for any help in this matter.

First question: Here is an intro to Italian bus travel. Fasten your seatbelt before reading. http://italyexplained.com/bus-travel-in-italy/

This site is a consolidator that simplifies your schedule & ticket choices, but they make a markup on the prices https://www.goeuro.com/buses/italy

According to the Trenitalia website, you can take a train from Rome but then you have to transfer to a bus in Isernia, which is quite out of the way. It looks like the travel time is between 3.5 and 4 hours one way.

Second question: It's about 7 hours by train from Rome to Zurich. Depending whether you can get from Castel di Sangro back to Rome early enough in the morning to catch a fast train to Zurich, it may be doable. I think flying Rome-Zurich would be easier, though.

Many thanks - I'll check it out. My husband also was thinking we could possibly rent a car to do these drives - but I'm not sure where to begin:

  • which rental company to go with, types of insurances to buy since we are from Canada
  • best travel routes to go, etc.

About car rental, look in the other section of these forums, under "Tips and Trip Reports." There's a section on car rental tips and you'll find advice from other travelers.

Also call your regular car insurance company in Canada and ask whether your policy gives you any coverage in Europe, or whether they can add any kind of rider that would do so.

The Michelin maps are probably the best to plot out your driving route.

Go to http://www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en
Put in Castel di Sangro to Zuerich HB leaving at 6:00
You'll see a bus to Isernia at 6:15 connecting to a Regionale to Roma Termini connecting to a Frecciarossa to Milano Centrale connecting to a EuroCity train to Zurich arriving at 18:51.
There is a similar connection leaving at 8:05, arriving Zurich at 20:51.

To get to Castel di Sangro from Rome, train/bus connection is a straight forward Regionale to Isernia then bus to Castel di Sangro. About 3 hour and 45 minute journey.
