We are flying into Pisa and staying in Siena. We were going to rent a car but are debating now since it will be much more pleasant to take tours where someone else drives. If we do not rent a car how do we get from Pisa Airport to Siena. It looks like there is only 1 bus a day at 1:00...my plane comes in at 11:00 and I am nervous what happens if we miss the bus. Hate to have to deal with all the luggage getting on and off a train. Has anyone ever taken a car or cab service? Thanks!! Ellen
A car or cab service will be very expensive. If you travel light, like many of the people on this board do, it is no problem getting on and off the train.
You should be able to take the train from Pisa to Sienna. You may have to change trains in Florence. OR, you can take the train from Pisa to Florence, and then take the bus from Florence to Siena, it runs quite often. The bus station in Florence is directly behind (or you could say next to) the train station. And, it is important to travel light. I can't imagine going with more than a carry on size piece and a personal piece like a tote or handbag. If that is your luggage, it's not a huge deal to get on and off a train or bus. If you do take the train from Florence to Siena, you will need to take a taxi to get to the old city center. The bus will drop you off closer to the city center, but then you would have to hire a taxi to get to your hotel anyway!
You may be able to take a bus from the Siena train station to somewhere near your hotel (local bus stop is outside the train station or across the street in the shopping arcade, depending on which bus you need). Cabs are also available at the station, and the Tourist Information desk inside the station is very helpful.
It is easy to catch a train from Pisa to Siena and you have to change trains at Empoli
Ellen, It's very easy to get from Pisa to Siena by train. There are numerous departures and as I recall there's a rail station right at Pisa airport. Depending on which train you're able to connect with, there may be one or more changes at Pisa Centrale, Firenze and/or Empoli, which are not difficult. For example, there's a train departing the airport at 11:03, arriving Siena at 13:38 (time 2H:35M, current fare €13.10, one change at Firenze SMN). The shortest travel time on that route appears to be 1H:56M (requires two changes). Most of the trains you'll be taking will likely be Regionale, so DON'T forget to validate! Happy travels!
You will take a train from inside the Airport and change twice: First change in Pisa Central Station Second change in Empoli (on the way to Florence) go to Trenitalia.com and check train schedule for your time of departure. Enter the following: Da (from): Pisa Aeroporto A (to): Siena enter date and time The closest to your time of arrival is with a Departure from the Airport station at 11:18am. that might be too early if you check in baggage. No worries. Next one is exactly one hour later at 12:18 pm. Once again get off at Pisa Centrale (just minutes later), then take a train to Florence and alight in Empoli, about 30 km before Florence.
Check the schedules, because some trains to Florence make no stops in Empoli (or anywhere).
Thank you all for your help! I feel so much better about taking the train now.. Happy travels all!! Ellen
Ellen, Pisa is one of only 4 airports in Italy with a train station. You easily take the 5-minute ride from the airport to the Pisa Centrale train station. At this point, you can decide if you want to jump in and see the leaning tower (it's a 25-minute walk from the train station). You could comsume about 1.5hr-2hrs for this visit. Taking the train from Pisa Centrale to Siena, you will most likely change trains at Empoli and not Florence. But, some trains to Siena do require a train change at Florence. This is a very easy train trip that will take about 2hrs with train changes. Fare is about 8.90Euro.
