How to get a guide at Pompeii, and do kids get in free at pompeii

We will be stopping on a cruise in Naples and plan to head to Pompeii. I have read somewhere that there are lots of guides waiting to be hired by the ticket window, true? Also, I have read that kids get in free to Pompeii, as long as you are paying for a tour? (guides negotiate the kids free for you at the window) Any help is MUCH appreciated! And any great must see/do ideas in Naples are welcome!
Thank you

yes, there are accredited guides available at the entrance to the Pompeii ruins. Do talk to one or two of them before committing to one. They all speak English but some might have an accent you find more difficult to understand

You pay them for the tour (quite reasonable fee imho). But you pay separately for the entrance to the site.

Kids are free if they are citizens of the European Union. And they might ask you for prove of citizenship (EU passport).

Since the first of July this year all under 18 year olds, not just EU, get in free to Pompeii. There is also a reduction for those aged 18 -24, the over 65 concession for EU citizens was ended at the same time.

Statements from the Uffizi in Florence about the changes. The first contains a link to the official press statement which they advise you print out to take with you to state run sites just in case local staff try to charge for children.

Beatrix - regarding up to date info on websites, it is Italy.

We were looking forward, after many visits to Pompeii etc over the years, to qualifying for free entry but times are hard!

thank you for posting the too good to be true press releases! we took our kids on an extensive trip through europe a few years ago and italy was the only place we had to pay to take them in to museums! so just for pompeii, this saves me 44 euros! woo-hoo, i'm definitely hiring a guide. :)

You are welcome. Did you notice that the second link said that on the first Sunday of every month it is free entry for everyone? I dread to think what the sites will be like on those days!
