How to Find Reliable Private Drivers in Rome

We'd like to plan a trip including 1 family member who has mobility issues. Ideally, we would need a private car and driver available for a good part of a week. How would I go about finding such a recommended driver?

Hi patkf1950 -
Could you be a little more specific about your family member's mobility issues? Understand that vehicles can't get riders DIRECTLY to attractions that are in pedestrianized or otherwise limited zones so some walking or additional forum of assistance may be necessary, such as a wheelchair. There are also some attractions which are not handicap accessible so it would be useful to know how extensive the "issues" are?

Also, are you planning on traveling outside of Rome, and if so, where?

Are you trying to hire a car and driver for a week? How many hours per day? Roma Cab (not a taxi company) provides cars and drivers.

My brother-in-law had a toe amputated so he cannot walk very far but could get from a reasonable drop-off point to a particular site I think. If there was someone who could be on call that would probably be best. I had cab in Rome refuse to take us when they deemed the distance too short so I'm reluctant to rely on them.

Maybe you consider a portable wheelchair. A lot of the sites will require a lot of walking because driver cannot get too close because of pedestrian zones.

Have you considered a golf cart tour? It may fit your needs. I looked into RollingRome.com before ultimately deciding on a segway tour instead.

If you are staying at a hotel, likely they could recommend a good driver to meet your needs.

hey hey patkf1950
don't know how many people are in your group, know all about mobility issues when i torn my meniscus 3 weeks before europe trip, NO FUN!! here's some other ideas for "tours" you all can do together. a private car and driver will be expensive, if you have the $$$ fine, may not get as close to attractions as you like and more walking for him. ask host for info or if wheelchair avainable or will you bring your own? make sure very durable for pushing over cobblestones and uneven pavement. check out sagetraveling.com for disabled travels, lots of info. go with positive attitudes, if plan A doesn't work plan B, stop for a glass of vino and people watch at rest stops, always have cab # and your hotel address on hand.
mybesttour.com has so many different tours waiting for you to check out
oldfrascati.com a wine tour and more out to the countryside, known for white wines, 30 minute train ride from rome. stop at ceralli.it a family owned bakery/pizza oven with the best "porchetta" in the area.
read about us and their blog, an area where the popes have there summer residence.
withlocals.com (beautiful countryside day trip: castelli romani) pass by lake nemi (town know for famous wild strawberry and goddess diana, small villages and palaces, stops for picture taking, local food and wine, private driver.
enjoy your vacation and have a fabulous time.
