Probably silly questin, trying to research where to stay in venice, I put question in the search bar,i put word venice in, always says no information found. How do you concentrate on just questions you want answers to??
There are many, many places to look for rooms in Venice. Rick Steves' travel books are good places to start.
I start at Booking.com and look at the customer ratings and what guests write about places. Venice has 642 listings for accommodations today. I also will often read TripAdvisor.com, looking for places with high customer ratings at attractive prices.
Venice is a very popular travel sight, and there's no lacking of rooms--mostly smaller places to stay. Good luck in your search.
Go to any hotel website such as:
www.venere.com
www.booking.com
or many others.
do a search there.
As mentioned, you can use tripadvisor to search for reviews of specific facilities.
sorry all, I wasn't clear, I am trying to do a search with the Rick Steeve travel helpline that we all use. I have researched hotels so much I am almost confused at this point which area to concentrate. Thinking Dusodoro but would like an area not too far from airport or train station (leaving)
The Sestiere of Dorsoduro (Venetian districts are called 'sestieri', as there are 6 of them) is one of the farthest from the station. The station is closest to the sestieri of Santa Croce or Cannaregio (although Cannaregio is pretty large). When you search for a hotel, google it also on the google map, so that its location will appear to you on the map, that way you can gauge the walking distance to the station.
The airport is nowhere near any sestiere, since it's located in the mainland. However being close to the station/Piazzale Roma area, will give you an advantage because Piazzale Roma is where the airport shuttle bus and the regular taxis are. The other alternative to the airport is via sea (water taxi or Alilaguna boats), but they tend to be more expensive and not that fast.
I just typed "Venice hotels" into the search box here and got plenty of hits. I would tend to take Rick's advice on hotels in Venice. He also does a good job of describing the neighborhoods.
its crazy I put venice hotel in the search ricksteves.com box and it says nothing, try another search. I cant search for anything...ugh!!! What could be wrong?

and I say, check out the Hotel Galleria. I am staying there for a second time this May and I have friends who will be making this their third visit at this lovely hotel. It is right on the Grand Canal. Ask for a room on the Canal. Pricing is especially good and even better if you don't mind using the bathroom in the hall. Breakfast comes on a silver tray. It is a wonderful experience. Pay in cash and you usually get a discount. I am 65 and feel incredibly comfortable at this small hotel. Great staff. Fabulous location. Amazing price. Have a wonderful time, Elaine!
Elaine, getting back to your initial question of how to do a search on this Helpline:
I put "Venice hotels" into the search box at the top of the Rick Steves Europe page, and pressed search.
It then told me nothing was available, but in doing that it showed another search box with the words "Venice Hotels" already written there.
I then pressed the "search" spot on that page, and
Voila, it then gave me a long list of queries and comments on the subject.
Who knows why? Not I.
See if that works for you too.

Go to the forums on TripAdvisor. The search function there works very well.
Well, the Search at the top of this page has been broken for me since I tried it several hours ago. Instead of returning search results it keeps giving me first a page with "We're sorry but something went wrong." and then a 404 Error page with a photo of RS slayed out on his back on a hardwood floor . . . with both Firefox and Internet Explorer . . .
