i am interested in staying in the hills at a small hotel or an upscale B&B. I want a view of the water from a terrace. Recommendations?
also, why are so many visitors complaining about ants in their room? bed? in this region? (even in fine properties). thanks

Susan - Steve is right on - as usual - my favorite area in that region is also Sorrento - As a base of operations it is a great 25 minute bus ride to Positano from the central square(be sure to sit on the right side of the bus), it is only a few miles to the town of Amalfi - gorgeous!! - And the hydrofoils also are great fun to Capri or any of the other group of towns.
I hate to build up Steve's ego any more but his hotel choice - also excellent - He should live in Europe - lol!!

Re ants. We have been visiting the area for 30 years and yes ants can sometimes be a problem. Fine properties or not, ants are not fussy and will seize an opportunity when they can! Its just one of those things you encounter when travelling. I can't forget some of the v large insects I met when visiting Westport CT a few years ago. Shudder!
Unfortunately there is no way of predicting when and where so we are always aware of the possibilty and deal with it if/when it arises. If in self catering accom a visit to the local supermarket for ant spray usually provides an effective solution. We spray base of walls, around windows and doors to create a barrier. Often you will find a can already provided at the property.

thanks for your honesty...at least i won't be shocked if i see them...
