How to Book the Train from Rome to Sorrento? Sorrento to Naples?

Does anyone know how we go about booking a train from Rome to Sorrento?

And from Sorrento to Naples?

We will be traveling in mid-September. Do most people book it on the spot, or in advance?

Natalia, I supplied some info in your other post.

You can't take a train directly from Rome to Sorrento: you'll have to switch in Naples to either the Circumvesuviana or Campania Express. You'll want to book a fast train from Roma Termini (main train station) to Napoli Centrale, then walk inside to Napoli Garibaldi station, which is connected. You can pre-purchase tickets for your fast train on Trenitalia (http://www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en) or Italotreno (http://www.italotreno.it/en). 2nd class tickets are is plenty good enough.

You may purchase tickets for your train from Rome to Naples when you get to Rome but there can be some nice price breaks for booking in advance. Just be aware that the least expensive tickets - super economy (trenitalia) or low cost (Italo) are usually non-refundable and non-changeable, or not without an additional change fee (Italo).

There's no need to pre-book the Circumvesuviana, and I'm not ever sure that's possible. Tickets are VERY inexpensive, and the trains run frequently.

I also gave you info for the Campania Express in that other post.

Going from Sorrento to the Naples airport, the Curreri bus is your best bet: I gave you a link for that. What time is your flight?

Everything Kathy said is spot on.

I would pre-book tickets from Rome to Naples (you can't book straight to Sorrento) cause you save a little bit of money pre-booking. When we did our trip, we actually stored our bags at the train station for a bit for a fee and wandered Naples for a bit, grabbed some pizza, etc. Instead of taking the Circumvesuviana local train, we went to the port and took a ferry over. I will admit, it was a little more money and took a little longer. However, I believe that so much beauty can be found in the journey. Just another option. It was nice to arrive in Sorrento by boat and the views were incredible. Coming back, we took the Circumvesuviana to Naples to save a bit of money. Honestly, there isnt any reason to prebook the Circumvesuviana train cause its runs frequently and is just a local train. However, if it makes you nervous, there is a fast pace Circumvesuviana train option that runs a few times a day. Essentially, you can pre-book those tickets, cause they only sell as many tickets as there are seats in the train. This train only stops in Naples, Pompeii, and Sorrento. It will cost you a few euros more for this train but it is a bit nicer, has A/C, and you are guaranteed a seat. Guess it depends on how much luggage you have. If you are carting a ton, I would look into this option.
