Planning my first trip to europe. we are thinking rome, paris, and then madrid. I was thinking of taking airplaines between the cities but then i see that train is cheaper. i went to eurail.com and saw a 3 contries pass "5 days withing 2 months" and so for. thats mean that i can use the pass 5 different days?? will that work if i want to go from madrid to paris and then to rome??? Really confuse here...dont know how this works...
You list two different itineraries: Rome-Paris-Madrid and Madrid-Paris-Rome. Which one will it be? The reason I ask is that booking on Trenitalia, the Italian rail site, can be problematic. Because of that, it's easier to book discount fare tickets for Paris-Rome on the French national rail site than it is for Rome-Paris on the Trenitalia site.
When will you be in Europe?
In the most basic sense, yes, that is what the pass means, you have 5 days of unlimited travel over the course of two months. The details get messy from there. Click on the tab above that says "railpasses" and hopefully your questions will be answered.
As for your plan, pay special attention to the following:
Many trains along those main routes may be premium trains, requiring reservations and fee's above the cost of the pass, meaning it may be just as easy just to buy a point to point ticket.
If you have time, there will certainly be slower trains requiring no fees, where your pass is all you need. For the distances you are talking about, it may work to break Rome/Paris and Paris/Madrid into two days of travel each.
Some routes from Rome to Paris actually go through Switzerland, meaning that would be a fourth country, even though you are just passing through. Simple choice of routes can avoid this problem.
thanks...getting to understand better... so i guess is better to pay when i leave and not to buy a full ticket...
have u heard about overnight train..are they safe?? i prefer to get a night train from rome to paris so i dont loose a day and i dont have to pay one more night in a hotel.
im plannig for march 2011. i wanted to goin october but i cant...until now the best that will work is madrid (3 days)-Paris (3 days)-Rome (4 days).
thanks for the help
