How's flying US to Italy Now?

I leave Monday from Newark, NJ destination Naples; however, we have a 2hr 40 min layover in Frankfurt. I'm pretty nervous how it's going to go, since I am hearing such HORROR stories on the news. I fly Luftthansa both legs. I'm only taking a carryon as I fear my checked bag might not make it, but can't get my husband to do the same. Any tips if we don't make our connection at Frankfurt airport???

If you don't make your connecting flight due to the first flight arriving late in Frankfurt, Lufthansa is obligated to put you on the next flight to Naples with seats available. You would have to go to one of their customers service counters. Frankfurt is a main hub for Lufthansa. Currently Lufthansa has 2 direct flights to Naples. I assume you are booked on the 10 am flight to Naples; if you don't make it in 2:40 minutes the next nonstop flight to Naples is at 9pm

"2hr 40 min layover in Frankfurt"

Plenty o' time - Frankfurt ground does hustle on transfer luggage, which is why those of us are waiting just a little bit longer at the arrival carousels at FRA.

Jazz+Travels: thank you for your detailed response to Kerry.

Can I assume the same holds true for us? We leave Tuesday at 2:20 pm from SeaTac on Lufthansa. We have a 3 hour layover in Frankfurt, destination is Salzburg, and we also will have checked bags. Does Lufthansa have additional flights to Salzburg that day, if the flight doesn’t connect on time?

Thanks for the info! Jazz+Travels: yes our flight from Frankfort to Naples is at 10:10. Happy to know we can get a later flight at 9pm if necessary. If that happens, is it worth going into Frankfort for a half day rather than sitting around the airport until 9pm? If so, what would you suggest for a few hours that wouldn't be overly taxing.

I always use Flight Aware to track my flight to see how it’s trending. I believe you can see the past ten days to see if it’s on time, late, etc.

We connected through Frankfurt last month, first leg United, second leg Lufthansa. We were supposed to have a 2hr 45min layover, but our flight left 1 hour 45 minutes late from Chicago. In the end, we had a one-hour layover. We made it through passport control and to our gate with 30 minutes to spare! The Frankfurt airport was incredibly efficient! We did check bags which did make our connecting flight.

We just returned July 2 on Lufthansa from Rome via Frankfurt to Newark. No problems. But I did hear plenty of horror stories.
We flew Swiss Air going over via Zurich and flight was delayed in take-off but they automatically put us on later flight 2 hours later. So no big deal.
I think 2hr 40 min is enough time to make next flight.
No fear about checking in a bag. All our bags made it fine. And it's nice not having a bag to carry in case you do need to rush!!

Last week (June 27), my husband flew Orlando (MCO) to Frankfurt then on to Venice Marco Polo (VCE). His original layover time was 1.5 hours, which was already tight. His plane departed late from MCO, so that he ended up landing in Frankfurt with 45 minutes until his flight departed. Also, because of the delay, his plane landed clear across the airport instead of close to his connecting gate.

Fortunately, he packed only in a carry on suitcase, and is in good enough shape that he could run to his gate.

He made it through customs and at his gate with 15 minutes to spare, only to find that his Frankfurt to Venice flight was delayed by 30 minutes.

I think your layover time will be long enough, but if your husband is unwilling to pack in a carryon, I say you're well within your rights to get on the plane alone if he doesn't make it :)

Our family of four were in Europe for three weeks in late May through June. We each packed one carry on suitcase and one backpack. None of us would ever consider checking a bag for Europe as we were walking cobblestone streets from train stations, responsible for hauling our own luggage in train stations, buses and trams, etc. We did not have to worry about lost luggage/retrieving it for security checks, etc., but this is personal preference…

I will share my personal horror story flying with Lufthansa from US (Philadelphia) to Florence with a long layover in Frankfurt. Arrived early June 4 in the morning so found a quiet place to try to nap a bit since I had about 9 hour layover. I have always had to rush to make connection so unusual for me. Should have been a "sign". In any case, hours later, I see delay after delay on flight board and was concerned. Eventually, my flight to Florence was cancelled about two hours before scheduled. Mad scramble with everyone rushing to booking counters...many of which were not staffed. Chaos. After many hours of standing/waiting on line, received a voucher for hotel for the night (no flights) and taxi voucher to hotel. By time I arrived at hotel it was about 11 pm. Restaurant was closed...I had no luggage so washed out my clothes in the sink. Next day June 5 back in line to book a flight. Stood in line ALL DAY with nothing to show...no flights at all. Another hotel voucher, another night of washing clothes in a sink etc. Next day June 6 I was told there were no flights at all to Florence....I asked if I could fly into another city (was previously told no on other days). The agent scheduled me on a flight to Milan and I then took a train to Florence at my own expense. It was total and utter disaster for days at Frankfurt airport. I sincerely hope you or anyone else does not experience this mess. Fortunately, I have a very long stay in Italy so my vacation wasn't ruined like others on a typical 2 week stay. Already, my trip home has already changed several times and has been a challenge to reach someone at Lufthansa to help. This can't continue...I hope. Good luck to everyone....

Good luck flying out of Newark to Frankfurt. We had bad experiences twice. Last October the plane was late leaving Newark, mechanical failure or something and we missed out connection from Frankfurt to Rome. Terrible time trying to get someone to help us. Lufthansa was little help. The airport is so big and being sent all over the airport for information, wearing a mask, didn't help. Also, the next time I go I'll do whatever I can to avoid Frankfurt airport,
