How often have you been asked to show proof of covid vaccination in Italy?

We are deciding whether to carry our original CDC vaccination cards or just photocopies while walking about in Italy. How many times have you been asked to show your original CDC card?

Have you been successful showing a photocopy of the CDC card?
Have you been successful showing an electronic US state-issued version?

I assume we will need the original CDC cards at airports.

Thank you.

Brought with us on southern Italy TS tour we are on now. Guide asked to see on first meeting. No one else has asked for them. That being said, we have them on phones and with passports just in case. More masked Locals than not…

You only need to upload a copy of either your CDC vaccination card or a official medical record from your doctors office listing your vaccination dates. I did the latter and United approved that and allowed me to checkin online and get a boarding pass at home. I did a carry on so I never needed to go to the counter both going a week ago and returning from Milan today.

While in Italy I did not have to show anything anytime and I crossed the border with Switzerland. The rules are always changing. Infections are up the Italian government made it mandatory to wear an FF2 or N95 mask on all public transportation and are passing them out at major train stations; there currently is automated reminders in English and Italian on the train about wearing that FFP2 or N95 type mask properly. The CDC card doesn't really mean much when you can still test positive for COVID-19 when it is time to take that mandatory test to return from your trip. The possibility of that happening is less when you where the mask properly in crowded places.

We uploaded to United before flying to Italy
We were never asked to show the actual card anywhere in Italy

I would still carry the original card
The US electronic version is useless in Europe

Well. it depends on the current requirements.

Right now, proof of vaccination is only required (well some other forms such as testing and recovery are also recognized) for entry, by your airline in the US before you board. Once there, no one will likely ask. (Rick Steves tours and a few other exceptions apply)

However, back in September, we had to show our CDC cards several times a day. Copies or an image on the phone were frowned upon. Basically, if you have to show it, best to have the original. Having a back up to carry around is fine if there is no current requirement though.

We have been in Sorrento since 12 May. We have never had to show our vaccine cards (even when flying from Newark to Naples).

We have kept our original vaccine paperwork back at the guest house we are staying at. There are 6 of us.

From 1st of May the Green Pass (or CDC Certificate) is required only in some special situation (like the access to some hospitals), so is almost never required in daily life. Before was mandatory and often required in almost all the indoor places, so you have to show it several times a day.

We returned home this past Wednesday after spending 9 days, mostly in Lucca, and Florence. Not once were we asked for Green Pass or vax card while in Italy.

We were in Italy from May 4-15th —entered via train from Germany and flew out via Swiss Air back to Paris. We traveled by train from Venice, Bologna, Florence, Siena, Rome and Tivoli. Stayed in hotels. Ate in restaurants. Not once were we asked for vaccine status/documentation. At customs and airport security screenings, agents seemed annoyed that my CDC card was tucked in my passport.

Masking required on the trains, and Swiss Air (but only the leg from Rome to Zurich— they actually wouldn’t board you unless you had an N95 or equivalent which they had available for purchase). We flew just after the airport masking requirement was dropped in the EU, so most weren’t masking at the airport. Some train personnel required the N95 mask per the official requirement but most didn’t care as long as you had a mask.

We spent April in Italy - Rome, Cortona and Spello. We were asked for Covid vax info three times the whole trip. We carried hard copy CDC vax card as well as digital image on our iPhones.

Last month we were asked once and that was when we went to San Siro in Milan for an Inter vs Roma match. We had our CDC cards as well as pictures on our phone.

I was never asked for my CDC card while in Rome, Naples, or Pompeii (May 8-19), nor was I asked to show it to the airline/airport personnel for Aer Lingus in New York JFK, Dublin, or Rome Fiumicino. I used Verifly ahead of time to upload my vaccination information, and that was sufficient for Aer Lingus.

We uploaded a copy of our cdc cards to AA Verifly before our flight to Italy, showed the cards to the RS tour guides for our back to back tours and never needed to show the cards again. We brought laminated copies to carry on our persons while out and about and kept the original copies safely tucked away.
