How NOT to be ripped off by taxi's in Italy???

I hate to book private car service for short trips from airports to my accommodation, because it's expensive, but is it likely that you won't get ripped off by the taxi's at the airport (Naples/Florence specifically?) For instance a private car from Naples to our accommodation in center would cost about 54 euro. I have not booked it, because I believe the taxi at airport should cost about 1/2 that. Is it likely that the taxi driver will use the meter and take credit card (I know they are now required to.) Should we ask up front if they are using the meter and tell them we only have credit card? My husband does speak Italian, should we say something before boarding the taxi or not??? Just would love to get a fair deal IF possible. We'd like to use taxi's more, because my husband has very bad knees, but on past trips, have been TAKEN FOR A RIDE if you know what I mean!

There is a fixed fare system in Naples from/to various places, including the Airport and the city center. Google for it, print it out from the City's Official site and show it to the cab driver, together with the credit card. Do it before getting on. Make clear you have no cash and you are not going to stop at an ATM to pay for the ride. Be blunt, but not rude, like everybody else in Naples.

The fixed fares haven't been updated for (edit:) 5 years whereas gas costs $ 8.3 per gallon now, don't be surprised if most drivers - as it is their right - will say: "No, thanks" and will suggest to turn the meter on. In my opinion they have a point.

Please do not tip taxi drivers (or anyone else).

We printed out that sheet with Naples’ taxi prices. The taxi driver at the airport tried to rip us off, we showed him the price sheet and he nodded a yes to the set price.

Taxi rate page from the Naples airport website. Do note fees which are additional to the per-minute metered rate.

To Dario's point about gas prices affecting a driver's understandable choice of metered over flat rate, an unexpected traffic backup or accident could just as understandably affect the final cost.

Naples traffic is insane.

Thanks for your advice! Yesterday, the booking.com apartment manager told me there is a planned taxi strike in Naples on the day we arrive, July 5 (and 6th.) Soooo, he arranged a private transfer and it's probably cheaper than the taxi for the 3 of us, 25 euro! Your advice will have to wait until the 7th; lol!
