How much time should I allow to leave FCO to catch a train?

Hi there!

I’m traveling to Rome next month and planning to take a train from Roma Termini and I’m trying to figure out how much time I need to give myself to get out of the airport so that I can buy my train ticket accordingly. I should be landing between 10-10:30am local time. If somehow I were to miss my train can I exchange for a later time if need be? If so, if there is a fare difference, how does that work?

Thanks in advance!

Just buy your ticket when you arrive at FCO. You could use an app, or a kiosk at the airport station, or the ticket window. The advance nonrefundable ticket difference is probably pretty small, and worth the worry. You don't say where you are going.

Arriving on an airplane is not the time to delve into discount tickets. Save that for when you know you are on the ground for a day or two.

Hello prontoponto, and welcome to the forum,

Local or regionale tickets are always the same price and never sell out so there is no reason to buy in advance. Fast train tickets between big cities - Trenitalia or .Italo - can be bought in advance for at a discount but you're trading flexibility for price since the cheaper they are the less changeable they are. To get a fully flexible ticket you'd need to pay full price (base fare) anyway so there is no reason to buy them in advance day of arrival.

For trains further on it your trip you should buy in advance if you are willing to trade price for committing to a specific train.

Get the Trenitalia app for train schedules and tickets on your phone.
