We are in the process of finalizing our Rome trip. One of the things we want to do is visit Ostia Antica. Including transporation from and back to Rome approximately how much time should we allow for visiting this site? Thanks
It will take you about 45 minutes to get to Ostia Antica from Rome. Once there, I would allow for about 2 hours to visit the ruins. If you have a day to spare, from there you could trek over to the beach at Ostia and cool off :)
We spent all morning at Ostia. When we left, there was still some we hadn't seen but we were ready for lunch.
I would probably allow 3 hours at the ruins themselves. A lot of it depends on your interest in Ancient Rome. But it's a wonderful place. Like Pompeii without the crowds.
I agree with the assessment of 2-3 hours, depending on your level of interest in ancient Rome.
We bought picnic supplies before we left central Rome (salumi, the best bufala mozzarella I've ever had, a half-bottle of wine, and pizza bianca), and had a delicious picnic lunch among the ruins.
I spent 4 hours there and still feel like I did not see everything. I did not read the description for EVERYTHING but did try to see as much as I could.
We spent an entire afternoon out there, including a lunch break at their cafeteria (which was good). After a while we didn't even read the long descriptions of what we were seeing, because we could SEE it - the houses, the bathrooms, the amphitheater. You really just "get it". Loved it. Enjoy!
Thanks everyone for your suggestions. It definitely helps me plan for our upcoming trip. Looking forward to it!!!
Ron - Ostia Antica is great, and as mentioned, easy to get to. For more info on visiting Ostia Antica, CLICK HERE . Have fun!
