Ok, I know its a very vague question. I am working on an itinerary for an upcoming adventure. We currently have 4 weeks planned in Europe with the last 10 (or so) days in Italy. Right now we have 3 days in Venice, 4 in Rome,
3 more in positano? amalfi? We have been to Rome only for a day and positano for a couple hours off a cruise ship a couple years ago. How much time is good for Venice? I know some people stay a week and wish it could be longer. But is 3 days ok to see the sites and get a feel for the city? We are travelling by train, and thats why I am wondering if positano is better than amalfi as its more accessible by train. Any other suggestions for a resort area to end our trip with? Thanks much!
Sorry I just reread my post and see I made an error....the 3 nights are in SORRENTO as that is more accessible by train. ooopssss! :)
You can see the best of Venice comfortably in 3 days. I wouldn't spend less, especially if it means shaving a day off the other two. If you arrange it so that you take a late train to Rome on the 3rd day, then if you decide you've had enough of Venice, you can take an early train instead. If you wander away from Piazza San Marco, Venice is a lovely place to get lost in for a few hours. And download Rick's free walking tours of Venice (there are 4). I enjoyed them all, did the Grand Canal twice, once in daylight and once after dark.
Amen to everything Chani said. If you only have 10 days, this is a good way to split it up. Avoid the temptation to add more stops as you are covering a lot of territory from Venice to Sorrento. Take the fast trains; the Frecciaargento from Venice to Rome is 3.75 hours.
