We are visiting Venice for 2 1/2 days in mid-September then moving on to Trieste. Looking for suggestions for how much time is ample to spend in Trieste, do-not-miss sites and accommodations.
The main attraction is the Miramare Castle, although it is more of a large house. I would buy tickets ahead of time. We drove there one Sunday last September and there were no tickets available.
There are also a few small museums. Oh, also avoid Sunday, lots closed.
From Trieste we rented a car for a day which was easy to do near the cruise terminal at the waterfront.
We went up toward the Italy Slovenia border and met a guide who took us around WW I sites. A great day. We found the guide by emailing one of the museums up there.
I think I found it from this link. http://www.potmiru.si/eng/info-center My note to myself on my itinerary was "There is visitor center, pdf brochures, maps. Visitor center is only 1.5 hour drive from Trieste hotel."
I also especially enjoyed this book about the unique history of Trieste. "Trieste And The Meaning Of Nowhere" by Jan Morris
