Hi. My wife and I are planning a two-week trip to Italy in September and would like to spend some time on Sardinia. How much time would you recommend that we commit to do the place justice? We are interested in going to the beach and exploring the historical sites.

I have not been yet--it is high on my list, and when I go, I will devote my entire 10-day vacation there. From my initial research (I'm always planning something), it seems the sights are somewhat far apart. So, I think you will need to be selective about what you wish to see and do, and a car is probably a necessity. I would scope out the travel options by air based on your planned mainland itinerary, as ferry would eat into your time, and go from there. Given the arrangement of the archaeological sites and the location of the airports, you are probably safe picking either "north" or "south" and allotting about 5 days to get a flavor of the place.
