Hello fellow travelers! My husband and I will be in Bellagio for 3 nights before transiting to Lake Garda. An Italian friend suggested a stop in Bergamo. It looks beautiful! Question; is Bergamo worth stopping for a night or will lunch and a stroll around Citta Alta suffice?
Many thanks!
One full day is good enough. Everything you need to see is in the Città Alta.
If you want to spend one night, that would be good so you have a place where to store your luggage, and also you might have a chance to enjoy a dinner and a stroll in the evening. If you travel by public transport that is probably what you should do, as otherwise you'd need to find arrangements for luggage and the Bergamo station has no luggage storage.
I stayed in Bergamo Citta Alta three nights and enjoyed it very much! The details are in my June 2022 trip report to give you some ideas:
Thank you, Jean and Roberto!
Loved, loved, loved Bergamo! If all you can spare is lunch and a stroll in the Citta Alta don't miss it.
We spent 2 nights there in late September. I would recommend the overnight if you can spare the time. The Citta Alta is small, but I really like taking things a little slower to enjoy the charms of these smaller towns. Seeing how different everything looks in the day vs. the evening/night. Poking my nose in the amazing churches and charming shops. Walking the ramparts. Leisurely apertivos and dinner with all the day trippers gone for the evening. But if you are pushed for time the sights of the Citta Alta can be seen in just an afternoon.
