How much time do I need for Capri?

I've been reading up on Capri for an upcoming trip and I'm amassing quite a list of things I'd like to see/do there. I was originally going to visit Capri as a day trip from Sorrento or Positano but now I'm wondering if I really need 2 full days on Capri in order to see everything I want. Please give me your opinion on how many days I need to do the following: -A boat ride around Capri to include a visit to the Blue Grotto -Walk around Anacapri -Take chairlift to top of Monte Solaro -Walk around Capri Town
-A walk to the Arco Naturale from Capri Town

Sheron, If you have the time, I'd suggest spending two days on Capri in order to comfortably fit everything on your list. I find that even wandering around exploring the shops, etc. seems to use lots of time. Hotels likely won't be cheap, but I expect it will be very comfortable accommodations! Happy travels!

We spent two days on Capri in May, and two days was just enough time (but we did not visit the Blue Grotto, which I hear can take some time depending on the wait). Consider a visit to the Alex Munte house and gardens in Anacapri, just a short walk from where you would meet the chairlift to go up. The house is small and somewhat interesting, but the gardens and the view incredible. There is also a smaller, but nice garden at Via Krupp, and if you follow the lane all the way to the end, some great views and a delightful walkway. Also consider taking a convertible taxi - great fun, especially if you get the antique Fiat. Photo ops. You'll love the chairlift as it is very peaceful, and you will get some great photos from the top. Three days might be better, if you have a spare day.

Hi Margaret. Thanks so much for the suggestions but what is a convertible taxi?

I had no trouble filling two days, and I didn't do the boat ride. I did do a fair amount of walking. I stayed at the Hotel La Tosca which was fine and NOT expensive. At least, not in April.

Sheron, a convertible taxi is basically a taxi cab that is a convertible car (the top rolls back, so it is open air). Most are designed for four passengers (five if one person sits next to the driver). When you see the roads, curves, and how closely the cars pass each other on the somewhat narrow roads, you'll be glad a local is driving. The views are fantastic. You might want to take the taxi from the ferry port to your hotel, or from your hotel to Anacapri (or a combination thereof). The drivers have good senses of humor. As we approached one hairpin curve, a driver told us it was called "Oh My God" curve (obviously named after the reaction he's heard over and over from English-speaking guests). Have a great trip.

Thank you for all the advice. I think I definitely need 2 full days in Capri. I'm planning to stay in either Positano or Sorrento. Would it make sense to take 2 days trips to Capri rather than changing hotels for 1-2 nights & staying on Capri itself? I'm trying to minimize too many hotel/location changes.

You're much better off staying on Capri itself - three nights so you get two full days. That way you get to enjoy the island without the hordes of day trippers.

Agree that it is much better to stay a night or two on Capri instead of going back and forth twice. Waiting for ferries and two back/forth journeys would take up lots of precious time. We stayed at the Quisisiana Hotel on Capri (part of a Tauck Tour), and it was very, very nice, but probably very expensive, too. While out walking, we noticed the Hotel Luna was in the most wonderful location. Only saw their large outside gardens and lobby area (both beautiful), & staff seemed delightful when we asked if we could take a look. They have some rooms with private balconies that sort of overhang the ocean side and face large rock formations out in the water. A truly incredible view. I checked out the Hotel Luna on TripAdvisor after returning home. Most posters were very pleased, although a couple said rooms were a bit dated, but oh the location!!!! I'd consider staying there if we ever return based on what we saw. Capri has many nice hotels, though, at various price points.

I agree with Kathy. Hotel La Tosca is one of the best deals in Capri (hotels are super expensive!) and rates very high on TripAdvisor for good reason - value, cleanliness, views from the breakfast terrace, helpful owner...our room was simple, clean, and airy. For your 2-3 nights, this is a great option.
