How much time does it average from- landing in Rome- going thru customs- to arriving via the express to the central train station in Rome? (Trying to see how much time we have actually in Rome before heading to the port to meet a ship.)
Mariann, there are many factors that may influence your time. Probably the two challenges with the most variable times are the lines at immigration (passport control) and the wait times for your luggage. If your plane arrives as other Non-Schengen flights are arriving, the lines can get long. Also, it depends on the number of counters the Italian authorities have open. I've been through passport control in less than 5 minutes and as long as 45 minutes. Luggage is also pretty variable. But it has improved at FCO! A few weeks ago we flew in and out of Rome a couple times and BOTH times our luggage wait was less than 15 minutes - That's pretty good as we've waited as long as an hour! These two posts (with plenty of pictures), Arriving at FCO and Terminal 3 Arrivals at Fiumicino Airport, may give you some additional insight into the walk through the airport. The FCO train station is just a 5 minute walk from T3 Arrivals, but then you may have to wait as the Leonardo Express leaves every half hour. It takes 31 minutes to get from the airport to the Roma Termini Station on the Express Train. So you are probably are looking at anywhere from 1.5 - 2.5 hours to get into town, depending on the many variables. Sorry I cannot give you a more fixed number but FCO has many quirks!
This is perfect information! It's just what I needed before buying tickets for a tour at the Colosseum. Our flight arrives at 8:30 am and our ship departs at 5pm. We will store our bags at the train station- tour the Colosseum- and then go on to Civitavecchia. Thank you!
Keep in mind that it is about an hour train to Civit..... and the luggage line at Termini can be long and slow. You should be leaving Rome no later than 2:30 pm. So you will have about four hours in Rome.
Thank you! You just answered my next question. I really appreciate you taking the time to assist with such clear information!
