How much is cab fare in Rome?

Just curious to know how much cab fare is in Rome? We are going to be taking taxi's from our hotel to the various sites.

From the airport to inside the Aurelian Walls (i.e., the central core) is 40E. From your hotel to various sites will be charged by the meter--don't accept a ride from a cabbie with no meter--and will depend on where you are and where you are going.

Distances in Rome are not bad, and the city, at least the main touristy areas, is reasonably well served by bus and metro (subway). Unless you have a compelling reason to use a taxi, the general advice on this site will be to save yourself some euros and walk/use public transit.

We may be able to give you some more accurate numbers if you specify where your hotel is, and where you intend to go.

I would mostly concur with Liz. Rome is very walkable and fairly compact. The metro is nearly worthless except for some of the outlining areas. Buses are a much better choice. If this is your first trip to Rome the hop on/off bus, at least for the first day, can be a very good option. Will take you to all the sites with min hassle. In four trips to Rome we have never used a cab within the city.

Well, the only thing is I will ne with someone who is mobility chalenged. She can walk a little, but not a lot. Using a taxi would help her getting around. Our hotel states the following:

500 meters to Villa Borghese
3500 meters to Colloseum and Pantheon
4500 meters to Vatican

Have a play with this site. You will need your hotel address to start but if you put in a major site eg "Vatican" as a destination that should be sufficient. Remember it is only an estimate, traffic hold ups etc will make a difference.

Steve,

Taking a Taxi from your hotel to the various sites is undoubtedly the MOST expensive option. Depending on where you're staying, the Metro, Buses or Trams would far less expensive.

I don't agree with a previous post that the Metro in Rome is "worthless". On past visits staying in the Termini area, it was quite convenient and my primary mode of transport to the "various sites".

On my last visit, I stayed in the Trastevere area so the best choice would have been the Trams, however I managed to walk to the Pantheon and other sites.

Of course, if there are "mobility issues" that changes the picture. When using the Metro, some degree of walking is necessary. There's a station right across from the Colosseum, so that's fairly easy. However, the closest station to the Vatican if a few blocks away, so some walking is necessary.

Happy travels!

It sounds like using cabs for what we need might be the best thing. I was told by someone else to MAKE SURE they have a meter though and not to hail one, but go to a taxi stand.

I think the farthest thing from our hotel was about 2-3 miles. So would that be something that is about 6-10 euros for 4 people?

My two rules in cabs (definitely apply in Rome) is settle on a price before you get in and have exact change (including tip) so there is no hassle about whether you handed them a 20 or a 50.

We used cabs in Rome on our most recent trip and generally paid between 6-10 Euros per trip (for four people). This was toward the end of our trip and we were pretty worn out from walking--plus we enjoyed the AC in the cabs! We used the Metro and buses quite a bit the first few days, as we had a Roma Pass, but the Metro may prove difficult for someone with trouble walking, as there were often stairs without an escalator option.

I agree that the metro is generally more trouble than it's worth UNLESS you are staying near Termini which is the central hub of the metro system. Staying in Trastevere for example makes the metro useless to you because it doesn't go there.

Just to chime in on the metro debate--we used the metro quite a lot, more than the bus actually (though we did bus quite a bit as well). It's useful for some of the main sites, depending on where your hotel is. We used the metro to get to the Colosseum, Spanish Steps, and the Vatican.

We actually also ended up doing a bus-metro combination to get back to our hotel from Trastevere, as we got tired of waiting for the bus that would have taken us nearest to our hotel. Rode the bus from Trastevere to the Piramide metro station, then hopped on the metro the rest of the way. It's not as well developed as other places in Europe, but I'd say it's far from worthless.

Since Steve has someone with mobility issues, however, I would NOT recommend using the metro. One more piece of advice about cabs--only get into an officially marked taxi, and pay close attention to the meter, the money you hand over, change if you get it, etc. The italians make an art form out of cheating unsuspecting tourists. Plenty are honest, but plenty won't mind making an extra 10 euro because you weren't watching.

We took a cab from our apartment in Trastevere to the Termini last year. I seem to recall it cost about 10-12 euros for the two of us. I think taxis within Rome are a very good option when you factor in the time saved (and especially if you're tired).

We were in Rome in early July for a few days and the 4 of us took taxis everywhere with no problems. 6 to 10 Euro per ride was about right, depending on disance of course. There are lots of taxi stands, near all the major sites (usually marked on Rick's maps), and we never had to wait for one. Just be on your toes to make sure it's a real taxi and that they reset the meter. Plus, they charge an extra Euro for luggage. One of the best decisions we made, it's a great plan if you are mobility or time challenged.

For four people, it will be a great deal. Most of our trips (and we used them a lot) were also in the 6-10EUR range. Was a nice break from the heat, to be honest...
