My boyfriend and I will be traveling to Italy in Sept. to celebrate his 40th birthday and we're arriving into Venice on Sept. 3 in the morning and flying back to the states out of Rome on Monday, September 13. I'm trying to figure out how to schedule our time. We'll probably spend 2 nights in Venice, 3 in Rome and then 4 in Cinque Terre and then the final night back in Rome. Does that make sense? Are we spending too much time in CT and not enough in Rome? He's been to Rome and Venice, but never CT. This will be my first trip to Italy. Many thanks and I look forward to your suggestions! Ashley
Try it this way... and in this order.
3 nights Venice
2 or 3 nights CT
4 or 5 nights Rome
Works better logistically.
No need to double back between Rome and CT. Go from Venice to CT then CT to Rome. You are wasting valuable travel time by going to Rome then CT and then back to Rome. Give Venice 2 nights, CT 3 nights, and the rest in Rome. Since it is your first time to Italy and all first timers should see Florence you could also do Venice 2 nights, CT 2 nights, Florence 2 nights, and Rome 4 nights.
Thanks so much for the suggestions. Not sure why it didn't occur to me to go from Venice to CT directly...
I may try to add Florence in, too!
We did your same trip in reverse. Rome 4 nights, CT 2 nights (which we felt was enough, but next time we need a long relaxing time, we'll spend more time there) then 3 nights Venice. We could have spent more time in Venice, but were ready to go home and thought this was the perfect time period.
I think it all depends on your interests. If you're die hard hikers, then you might like all that time in CT. Or if you just want to hang out and relax, you might like all that time there. CT will mess with you (in a good way!) Rome is intense and you might like more time there to see more of it. But, at the end of the trip, you might just want to wander and relax more.
Any way you cut it up, you're going to have a ball. Keep your interests in mind and plan accordingly. We loved the CT and could spend a week there no problem, but we were there off season and loved the no crowds, sleepy vibe!
Make a list of your must dos and you'll begin to figure out how much time you'll need at each city. Our list for Rome was long so we spent more time there.
if you could add florence or siena you would really enjoy your choice. venice is awesome, but is intense, it can be crowded. ct is great, but two nights probably enough. rome, vatican city, easily three nights. you can do florence or siena.
Two nights in Venice, 2 nights in CT, 2nights in Siena, and finish up in Rome. Sounds like a great trip! Enjoy. Jeff
