How many nights in Matera?

We'll be staying in Puglia during January, splitting time between Lecce and Monopoli with lots of day trips to other towns, but would like to stay in Matera.

Should we plan or one or two nights in Matera? Any lodging recommendations there? Thanks.

Of course it depends on your interests, but I liked it enough to visit twice, so I’d say 2!
Toretta ai Sassi is lovely.

I always recommend at least two nights in Matera and staying at the B & B La Corte dei Pastori. We had our own cave and a terrace looking over the sassi. The views of the sassi are at their best in the early mornings and evenings. We stayed for two nights (several years ago in November) and wished we had two more nights. There are wonderful non-fancy restaurants and the upper town (the new town) is also interesting.

I was there for three nights in September, I did not feel like that was too long.

We spent three nights, two nights would have seemed too short.

We spent 4 nights and were glad we did! There is so much to see in the area. Lots of great restaurants as well. It's magical at night.

Remember, (number of nights anywhere) minus 1 = (number of full days you get there).

We spent 3 nights in Matera (at La Dimora Delle 3 Zie - "House of the Three Aunts") and loved it. So we had two full days in Matera (plus our arrival evening), which seemed enough on our (as usual) fast-paced, probably-a-bit-too-hurried trip through Puglia (September 2025).

(One more day there would have been nice, but we say that about most places we go and I take it as a sign we chose our places well. Life's short, our list of places to go is long, so we do what we can to strike a reasonable balance.)

Can also highly recommend this restaurant - had some of the most incredible food there I've ever experienced: Osteria San Francesco

Close by the aforementioned hotel.

I'd suggest a minimum of two nights and preferably at least three. I assume you'll be checking a the Rick Steves guidebook or whatever to determine which activities there would most interest you. That will have some bearing on how long you stay.

I stayed at this hotel and was very pleased with the service and facilities there - https://hotelsassi.it/en/hotel-sassi .

I think it would depend on the total number of nights you have at your disposal for this trip and how many places you plan to see.

I don't like one nighters anywhere, so I would spend two in your case. If you have more, then you can spend more.

I have recently returned from Matera and would suggest you have 2-3 full days there. I stayed 100m outside of the stassi in an apartment called Le Casette. . 2 min walk to sassi, shops, supermarket. Excellent location.
Matera is magical and wonderful to walk around,

I would definitely recommend two nights in Matera, especially in January!

One of the best things about Matera is simply wandering through the Sassi in the evening, when the lights come on and the city feels almost magical.

Just keep in mind that January can be quite cold, especially in the evenings, and some of the streets and stairways can be slippery when wet. Comfortable shoes are a must!

We just did 3 nights. That worked for us, but we could have also been happy with two nights. I think one night would have felt too brief/rushed, especially if you want to cross the ravine to get the view back across of Matera.
