Considering hiring a car in Sicily and returning to Naples. 10 nights in Sicily then car ferry to mainland Italy. I had thought 3 nights in Positano ( for my birthday) and then 3 nights in Naples. Naples accommodation is booked and paid, so no negotiation there. Is 3 nights in Positano too much? Group of 5 consists of 4 adults and 10 year old. Should I take a night off Positano and stay somewhere eg Tropea?
I would love to hear from someone who driven the same route.
We were in the Amalfi area last fall. We stayed 5 nights in Sorrento, which we enjoyed because it was more central than Positano. From there we went to Capri, Pompeii and Herculeum, and did a full day driving tour with Mondo tours along the Amalfi coast. Rick Steve's has a deal with this tour. I think 3 nights would be too long in Positano, it is really the drive along the coast that is the amazing part. We stayed at Villa Monica which we loved. It is up in the hills over looking the bay.
How long would you stay in Tropea? It's set on a beautiful promontory, lots of beaches. Very close to Reggio Calabria. You could drive to Tropea, turn in the car somewhere nearby (there's a regional airport not far away), then take the train to Napoli; but it's a fairly long trip, by train or by car.
What's the drop-off fee for returning the car to Naples? Do Sicilian rental companies allow the car to be taken out of Sicily? Yes, 3 nights in Positano seems like a long time (since it's small and compact) but perhaps not if you want to be very leisurely and take your time exploring the other towns.
We spent 3 nights in Atrani (near Amalfi) in 2014. By the time we got there from Naples (after visiting Pompeii) it gave us 2 days and an evening...it gave us a VERY small taste of the coast.
We did a private van tour one day - so we spent a few hours in Ravello, Sorrento and Positano and then one day back in Ravello and exploring Amalfi. Def not enough time. I want to return for 5 nights in the future. If you were just staying in Positano and didn't want to travel to the other villages and towns, yeah, 3 nights may be too much, but to explore all these gorgeous places (especially Ravello - my fav on the coast) then that time will fly by.
Nicole, do you remember what company you used for the private van tour? Thanks!
I stayed a week in Positano and visited all of the surrounding towns. However, you may want to consider staying in Sorrento. It is more central you can visit Pompei, Positano, Capri.
Enjoy your trip
