How many hours for the Caesar Shuffle?

Hi,

I am thinking of taking the 6:30 train from Venice to Rome during my vacation in August. Our first day in Rome has the following plan from Rick Steves' itinerary:

Do the "Caesar Shuffle" from the Colosseum to the Forum, Mamertine Prison, Trajan's Forum, Capitol Hill, and Pantheon.

The 6:30 AM train arrives in Rome at 11:10 AM. Is around half a day enough time to do the Caesar Shuffle?

Thanks,
Raji.

Dear Raji,

Sure it is. You should allow at least 2 (leaving out the pantheon), preferably 3 or 4 hours for all of Ancient Rome. A guided tour would help you get through quickly without missing anything important.

You'll have to keep moving but it's definitely do-able. Make sure you wear good walking shoes!

We thought so Raji - but it was the hottest May on recrods the locals said, and wound up cutting back.

There is a night train from Venice, that will get you in about 7AM, and is very nice/comfortable, and inexpensive. (I think it's the 771 Marco Polo, departing Venice 23:30).
