We will be visiting Volterra for the first time this June, using public transportation. We are torn between staying 3 nights (2.5 days) or 4 nights. We would like to see Volterra at a leisurely pace with a possible day trip to San G. Any thoughts or input would be welcome.

You can "see" Volterra in a day. Experiencing it might take 2 or 3 nights. I think 3 would about max it out unless you are into hiking or major winery touring. San Gimignano takes about half-a-day.

We saw San Gimignano and Volterra in a day, but we were traveling by car. They're maybe 20 miles apart on a pretty crooked, but well paved road.
I'd say just stay one night and hit another city.
